Hi everyone, just wanted to check in – the last year has vanished with little trace. Grief moves at its own pace, but I’m doing okay & trying to get back into the swing of things. My second solo album is finished. Figuring out now whether I’m going to partner with a label, or if it’s going to be all Lunatone Records. Sadly there’ll be no Octoberflame again this year. But I can’t wait to share this new music with you! I may as well tell you the album title now: it’s going to be called ‘Golden Dream’. It’s for my parents & my home state of California. I’ve been to Austin & Nashville this year and they’re great but there’s no place like home. Until we meet again!

I hope you all had a nice Christmas, the holidays can be tough. Thank you to everyone who’s been there for me this year in ways big & small. Peace on Earth and good will towards men probably won’t happen but it’s a something to strive for. Even if you don’t believe in it, celebrating around the time of Winter Solstice is something that goes way back for humankind across many cultures, so here’s a bunch of pictures of me celebrating the season in sweaters. The new solo album is basically done & I hope to have more to say about that soon, but for now let’s try to be good to each other & keep a thought for those who may not have anyone to celebrate with this year. — n13♤ by @nick13

Before I can explain where I’ve been, or what’s going on with Octoberflame or the new solo album, I need to take you back to June of 2023 when my beloved Mom passed away suddenly. I never posted about it, it was too hard. I still can’t put into words how kind she was, what a great mother she was, or how much she meant to me. It left my Dad devasted, they’d been together for so many years. Some of you were there when I paid tribute to her at Octoberflame XII at the Palladium in Los Angeles in 2023, my last time onstage. What almost no one knew is that about a month before that Octoberflame, my Dad told me that he had cancer, that it had spread and things didn’t look great. He wanted me to play that show, right after that I went to him. Trying to help him and take care of him became my focus until late August this year, when he crossed over to the other side. During the times he was doing better, I returned home to Los Angeles and worked on my second solo album, with his encouragement. During the times he was worse, I was by his side. I really can’t explain how much he was there for me over the course of my entire life. He was a singer in his youth. I think the vocal and musical side of me came from him, and the literary and lyrical side from my Mom. My friend put their image on a Día de Muertos ofrenda (altar) yesterday for me, it brought me a small comfort. I do believe that our souls live on after we leave this world, and I like to think they’re together again in the next realm. I hope they know how much I loved them both. Now I’m trying to pick up the pieces after so much loss. Octoberflame will have to wait until another year. The solo album has been completely recorded. It’s 70% mixed, I hope to finish mixing and mastering next month. I don’t know when it’s coming out yet. I do miss you all and miss playing music, I’ll get back to that this coming year. ANNOUNCEMENT: Hi everyone, @nick13 here… there’s good news and bad news. I always start with the bad news first: there will be no Octoberflame this year, I’m not sure when @tigerarmy will take the stage next. The good news (for most of you, I hope!): this is largely because there’s going to be a second Nick 13 solo album and recording is already underway – much of the music has already been cut.

There’s still plenty to do and I’ll share more when I can, but finishing this record is going to be what a lot of my time revolves around this summer and fall. Lots of exciting things to come, but I’m gonna miss seeing your faces in October. As always, TxAxNxDx – n13♤ by @nick13

Hi everyone, hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving… I know the holidays can go either way. This is my solo album from 2011. Many of you have it, many probably don’t. It meant a lot to me making it, and a lot of people didn’t understand it at the time. It’s been in & out of print. There’s a new vinyl color ‘Tiger’s Eye’ (like the gemstone!), it’s limited to 500 and it’s just gone up in my solo webstore, the only place to get it. I do think it’s a thing of beauty. I feel like the boy who cried wolf, but it’s still very much my intention to follow this record up, even over a decade later. I won’t talk too much more about that until things are actually happening. I did write another song for it the day before Thanksgiving, out in the woods I grew up in. I know the legacy of that holiday is complicated (like most things), but I do believe it’s a good thing to reflect on the concept of gratitude. I’m thankful I still get to play music after all these years and for everyone who’s come on this journey with me whether it’s Tiger Army or my solo work. My best to you all. ♡ - n13 ♤ by @nick13

Home from tour! @tigerarmy just finished leg one w/ @floggingmolly @theinterrupters @theskints. 19 shows played, 1 missed, a few bumps in the road but many more great times & great people. Thanks to everyone who was a part of it & everyone who came out to a show — looking forward to the second leg in Sept.!

This month, I lost my dear kitty California. She was a stray kitten who appeared outside my house in 2011 and of course I couldn’t resist feeding her. She frequently hissed because she was so scared, but she was incredibly loving – once she crawled on my chest and snuggled up that was it. I remember being worried about her outside when I was away to do Octoberflame III with @tigerarmy and in Nashville to do some solo performances that fall. By Christmas that year she’d been fixed and moved inside. She never lost her feral side and was afraid of most people besides myself. Just before this past Christmas I took her to the vet because I’d noticed some weight loss and long story short, a few weeks later she was gone due to cancer. As with people, some cats are incredibly unique and special — that was her. I’m grateful for all the companionship she gave me, especially during the pandemic. I’ll miss her coming over and rubbing up against my leg when I pick up the guitar and attempt to write a song, the way she’d always meow a response when I spoke to her and the unconditional love she gave with such a strong will in her small body. Her passing reminds me how quickly life can change, how lucky I’ve been these past few years and how lucky I was to have her in my life. Pets become part of our family and sometimes they wind up taking care of us just as much as we do them. Cherish those you love while you can, human or otherwise.
