For many years I teetered on the edge of burnout. But a few years ago, I was taught a practice that helped me rest, and ultimately rejuvenated my soul. That practice was and is Sabbath. Sabbath is 24 hours without work, and instead filled with rest, delight and worship.

Sabbath is countercultural. In a world screaming for our attention, Sabbath simply says, “no.”

The practice is an act of faith — a belief that the world will still turn without you. That clients can wait. That Instagram will still be there the next day, and that you do not need to keep striving, chasing after the wind.

If you believe in God, remember that on the 7th day, after God created the universe, He rested. He passed that day to Moses in the 10 Commandments, and reminded his people of it over and over again. It’s in the same list of commandments as “don’t murder,” and “don’t steal.”

Jesus taught his students that Sabbath is a gift, not a set of rules. “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27-28). Christ rested on that day, and also healed.

Sabbath also has scientific backing. Studies point to a set number of hours humans are able to work before productivity crashes. That number usually equals about six days of work. Meanwhile, Seventh Day Adventists, who are serious about their observance, live about six years longer than the general population.

Practicing Sabbath is simple.Stop working, and start resting, delighting and worshipping. For Kerry and I that means naps, walks, reading, time in nature, church, music, singing, and sunshine. It also means limited screen time, little to no shopping, and no scrolling.

It can be hard to resist the temptations of the world. But, the rest and joy I feel with Sabbath is better than anything those distractions can offer.

Sabbath can be practiced any day. We practice Sunday because it fits our schedules and church service the best. But we know others who practice from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. It’s your choice.

I also wrote a more extended piece on my Substack — nickbrownco.substack.com.

One year ago today, Kerry and I married! To celebrate our anniversary, here’s a video from our wedding!
What a wonderful 365 days it has been. So full of love, laughter, great days and nights whether traveling or just enjoying our life together. It has been so great, that I had been procrastinating putting together this recap video. But here it is. The Browns! 12.16.23

Thank you to everyone who made that day (and this video) come together:

Scenes from today’s @NationalWestern Stock Show parade in #Denver. One of America’s coolest traditions as dozens of longhorns are driven through downtown. We are thrilled to introduce you to our son, Levi Joseph Brown. Levi was born yesterday — November 20, 2025 at 5:20 am. He is good health, and mom is recovering well.

We are so grateful for this amazing blessing from above.

“For it was you who formed my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully
and wonderfully made.”
Psalm 139 13-14

Thank you, LORD.

Scored my first albatross — a 2 on a par 5!

I sliced my drive, and landed on the next hole’s tee box. Then I hit a 7 iron and it landed hard close to the hole. I saw one bounce, and didn’t know what happened to it. Kerry said, “I think it went in.”

I made my way to the cup, and sure enough it was in there.

I’ve come within a few feet of a hole in one and an eagle, but never close to an albatross, so this was miraculous! Apparently the odds are 6 million to one. 😂

God is good! 🙌
