There are a few exciting things happening all at once in this wild life of mine, but you’ll be happy to hear that I’m still keeping my eye on the metaphorical prize and making some beautiful paintings by @nickoller

Pure magic. @anna.arnet attended my performance last weekend and I am in awe of the photos she took. They beautifully capture the spirit of, the essence of that evening we all spent together. Thank you, Anna 🙏🏻

And a shout out to @carolinamunoza who lovingly braided my hair for the show! It takes a village, y’all. 🥰 by @nickoller

Today I want to share with you (what was inevitably) the most overlooked and/or hidden bit of our presentation at @springbreakartshow @rachelginsberg … one of my poems tucked away in the supplemental text pamphlet. It is rather personal, vulnerable and, well, it vibes in such a big, beautiful way with what’s happening in these paintings

I find it charming that we (artists) manage to say the same thing over and over in new and different ways. We are indeed funny, shifty creatures taken in SPRING/BREAK Art Show by @nickoller

Placing A HISTORY OF FLAMES as the centerpiece of our booth @springbreakartshow curated by @rachelginsberg and bringing its text so directly in dialogue with my recent paintings, drawings and research was illuminating. It really underscored how, despite the years and different forms between them, I’ve returned again and again to many of the same questions. Chief among them: Who are we? What makes us human? What is this burning impulse we have to create — to make art, invent technologies and shape the world around us? … A HISTORY OF FLAMES follows fire forward through time, tracing a poetic lineage from one of our earliest tools to the lights, screens, and glowing technologies that now surround us. taken in SPRING/BREAK Art Show by @nickoller

Come see us at Booth D25 @springbreakartshow — I’ll be here all weekend (Thursday-Monday). Come say hi! ✨🖤

Sharing some installation shots to honor all the work we put into this show. I’m feeling proud it! Feeling lucky to have so much space in this tucked-away, hidden treasure of a room and also really appreciative of my curator/collaborator/friend @rachelginsberg

This show feels really special, the paintings are glowing on the walls, and, god, I’d really love for you to see this in person [ticket link in bio]

📣THIS WEEK! Held in Light opens at the 15th edition of SPRING/BREAK Art Show!✨

I’m excited about this show for many reasons, not the least of which is that we’re showing selections from 3 bodies of work by my dear friend and collaborator Nic Koller that focus on explorations and representations of self and the technologies (old and new) we use to create them. It’s also my first formal curatorial effort!

SPRING/BREAK opens tomorrow night (9/23) and runs through 9/28, 12-7 each day.
Come check out Nic’s gorgeous work alongside a collection of 120+ independently curated booths full of truly magnificent work that I’ve been popping out to ogle while installing ours. TICKET LINK IN BIO! BOOTH D25!!

More about Held in Light:

Throughout history, humans have developed myriad technologies to manifest our seemingly inexhaustible drive to examine what it means to be ourselves. As today’s version of that tech is now ubiquitous, the line between participation, performance, and (over)exposure has become blurrier than ever.

Held in Light explores relationships between the body, the self, the selves we create, and the technologies we use to plumb their depths. Presenting an 8-year arc of research by cross-disciplinary artist Nic Koller (they/them) the show asks: In our age of digital reproduction, does technology illuminate, obscure, or create us?

In parallel to interrogating these questions, the show presents an earnest exploration of process across three bodies of work. Combining hand-crafted, light-, and lens-based media, each format-challenging group integrates motion in a different, but essential way: as a performative process of making, in creating references for images eventually rendered as still, and as inherent to the format itself.

It is our intention for Held in Light to invite viewers to contemplate their/our relationships to technology, exposure, and the performativity that has become such a hallmark of the present moment. How might different ways of making, in shadow and the full brightness of day, expose different ways of knowing ourselves and each other?

You’re invited to “Held In Light,” a solo presentation of my work at @springbreakartshow curated by @rachelginsberg We’re building something really special (and there will be lots of amazing art throughout the fair!) so I hope you’ll make a plan to come see it. [Ticket link in bio]

For me, Held in Light is particularly exciting because the exhibition goes beyond the new paintings I’ve been making, bringing together the work and experiments that shaped them, as well as the research unfolding beneath. We’re leaving it all on the table – revealing the various paths that led from one thing to another.

And at the center of this 8 year arc of my work and research are some big questions: How do the technologies we create shape and form us in return? What happens when these tools we use to tell our stories bear ever heavier influence over how we see, understand, and imagine ourselves?

For a whole year, I was planning on trashing these two paintings, BUT every time I showed them to someone, they saw something that I didn’t— they liked them. And so instead, I recently revisited and retouched them… and now I see it too.

Go figure.
