Wow! Last time I was in the city was 2019. It does feel great to be back. It was a crappy 15 hour flight delay saga to get here (It literally always is now flying)…and there was a storm… and I was afraid no one would be able to make it for an impromptu gathering at @temkinsnyc … but alas we filled the corner of the bar and my heart was warmed by catching up, a kolache, a couple pints, good friends, conversations and even a little card tricks!

As @howegelb said I am the travel cooler. If you see me board your plane know there is a zero percent chance of on time arrival.

I finally get a chance at @thegotham project week so of course there’s a storm.

But man I felt appreciated - despite it all - amazing friends joined me , welcomed me , and reminded me how good it is to be back!

Today, our Spanish group had our farewell (for now! ) picnic.

It's been such a great 5 months getting to know these guys, witnessing their growth and seeing them build connections together.

Feeling full in body and soul.

Stay tuned for the next group coming in September!

This drawing was just included in a very DIY and very excellent project by @sofiquirno and @lindsay.m.burke at their studio. In this weird moment artist-run culture feels more important than ever ✨ Thank you to Sofi and Lindsay for organizing 🍎 (drawing pictured is ‘Webbed’,
watercolour, ink, and pencil crayon on paper, 12 x 18 in, 2020). Swipe for the install alongside @lydiamariapfeffer, @michaelstammmmm , Rachel Selekman, and Tisch Abelow. Keep swiping for the roof and the curators!!

“No point in making myself comfortable. The abstraction, the dream, are as limited for me as the concrete and the real. What to do? Show a part of it only, in a narrow mirror, as if it were the whole? Mix up a halo with spatters? Refusing to bump into walls, bump into windows instead? In the black of night. Until I see everything clearly, I want to hunt myself down, struggle with myself.”
-Claude Cahun (Disavowals, 1930)

While No Point in Making Myself Comfortable encompasses approaches which all relate to “the body”, as curators, we were inspired by artist Gordon Hall's rejection of the term 'the body' as a universal signifier in favour of more specific explorations of embodiment. Claude Cahun's use of her own body as a gender-bending medium in the first half of the XXth century was a spiritual touchstone in juxtaposing these artists, whose varied approaches to figuration via abstract gestures tease the limits of the term “queer abstraction”. Rather than claim to reflect a universal
experience of embodiment, the works in this exhibition reflect on idiosyncratic themes – from childhood to desert scarcity – via approaches as varied as biomorphism, self-portraiture, diagrammatic flatness, cartoon figuration, and intuitive dreamscape.

Today is the SECOND LAST Saturday to see the show @vikroth and I curated at @springsprojects! In honour of this, I am sharing some behind the scenes snapshots as a reminder of the blood, sweat and tears that go into putting together an art exhibition (just kidding, no tears). Many thanks to Tommy White who provided reliable and detail oriented install support. As @catalina_schliebener reminded us while we were installing: “it takes a village!”
