Comtes de Champagne bookends for the first 18 years. The ‘98 drunk in a daze, trying to comprehend how my life had been changed.
The ‘08 shared with boundless gratitude that it did.

The trick to having kids is keep going until you get it right. While the older two stubbornly stayed in bed, this one was up and slaving away at the stove ,coffee machine, and juicer. So delicious I almost didn’t notice the absent apostrophe on the on the menu.
Edit: The other two eventually emerged to pay bleary tribute and be made aware a new standard has been set.

Ahhh shit Jukesy…..this is a right kick in the balls. I’ll use this picture as my clumsy attempt at this modern way of memorialising because this was a good day. It started badly, wrestling with a hangover that had blood on its fangs and drool on its lips, but we righted the ship with a bracing swim off Rottnest and a few equally bracing bottles. While I mocked the skipper’s song choices on the bumpy ride back, you celebrated them, bellowing into the breeze. At a lunch of suitably Jukesian pacing and duration, nobody else got to see the wine list. Not because of ego or a need to control, just the usual excitement and desire to share. Then off to the airport to get back to what really mattered.
Sometimes it seemed like Wodehouse had written you for us, but he couldn’t have captured the nuance and depth. I’ve never known another writer so willing to praise others, so ready to celebrate their successes, so eager to pull others up to where you rightfully sat.
Your words were wonderful, tasting with you always a joy.
If you left me a tenth of your talent and a fifth of your work ethic, I’d be a hundred times better than I am.
Go well mate….until the time comes when I get to see a halo trying to hang on that hair. by @nickryanwine

One night in a Pigalle bar, where the andouillete and the wine were aromatically indivisible, a waitress told my drinking buddy he looked like ‘ an even more handsome version of the actor Sam Neil’ ‘I’ll take that as a compliment,’ was Sam’s reply.
‘I’ve heard he’s a very nice man.’ Sam Neil was many things, but above all else ‘ a very nice man.’
He was a wine guy of the highest order, quietly annoyed with those who mischaracterised what he did as a celebrity side hustle.
His friends in the beautifully tight-knit winemaking crew in Central Otago know that all too well.
He was amused when I once confessed to never having seen the dinosaur flick, bemused when I’d frequently declare Death in Brunswick to be my favourite thing he did.
He was always more interested in what I thought of the wines anyway.
Thinking of his family tonight….those blessed by blood to be such, and those who are integral to the Two Paddocks family as well.
Go well Sam…. by @nickryanwine

Steve Webber made headlines last month when he ripped up unviable De Bortoli vines in the Riverina. Why has he just bought 50ha of Yarra red dirt to plant a vineyard of serious ambition?⁣

Tickets are officially live for @pairdfestival 2026, and I’m heading back to Margaret River this November for some serious vinous folklore.

This year, I’m keeping busy….hosting the iconic St. John x Wayfinder nose-to-tail wine dinner, guiding you through the region’s absolute best at The Grand Tasting Museum Masterclasses, and hosting something truly monumental at Leeuwin Estate - The History Makers.

I’ve persuaded the region’s heavyweights to crack open their museum cellars for the benchmark bottles that put Margaret River on the map. To match that Michelin-starred @dpynto (Burnt Ends) is teaming up with Leeuwin’s Dan Gedge to cook over the coals.

These bottles will likely never sit side-by-side in the same room again. It’s not just dinner….it’s a moment in history.

See you there.
