PALM SPRINGS, 2026
1,440 Colour Chip Collage on Heritage Conservation Board

Palm Springs takes its cue from the famous Kaufmann House pool, immortalised by Slim Aarons and lodged somewhere deep within the mythology of Californian leisure. Although I’ve never visited the pool myself, that seemed a rather poor reason not to spend an entire day there.

From breakfast through to late evening, the work follows the quiet rituals of a day beside the water, where time slips easily by and someone inevitably ends up in the pool fully clothed. A small cluster of yellow flowers offers a subtle nod to Aarons’ original photograph, a reminder that sometimes the difference between a swimming pool and a myth is simply good composition.

This is one of fourteen new works from Pool Diaries, my upcoming exhibition opening with RHODES on 9th July.

At first glance, these works appear to depict swimming pools.

Look a little closer and you’ll discover that every artwork contains an entire time-stamped diary, printed across hundreds of individual colour chips.

Each diary records a full day beside the pool, built from the quiet observations and rituals that often pass unnoticed. Together, those seemingly insignificant moments become portraits of a place and the people who briefly inhabit it.

POOL DIARIES is now showing at RHODES, London and runs till August 1st. @rhodescontemporaryart taken in Rhodes Contemporary Art by @nicksmith_art

'Turquoise Perpetual' by Nick Smith is one of four new works by the artist in '12:12.'

Smith began experimenting with the motif of the luxury watch - not only what it means to us as an accessory, but also what the act of counting time and letting time pass means.

PARADISE is less a lightbox... more a portal. Scaled to the body and glowing somewhere between sea and sky, it evokes that point where white sand meets warm water and everyday concerns dissolve.

I’ve always found the edge where sand meets the sea deeply restorative, and this work attempts to bottle some small part of that feeling. Stand before it long enough and it begins to function as a kind of paradise light therapy, offering temporary relief from weather, routine and reality itself.

Opening this evening 6-8pm, Nick Smith’s latest solo exhibition, Pool Diaries.

This new series of original collages capture the bright, cinematic atmosphere surrounding pool culture and the aspirational worlds that gather around it. Across 14 original works, pools emerge not simply as sites of leisure, but as carefully constructed environments suspended somewhere between architecture, ritual, performance and temporary escape.

Opening reception: 9th July 6-8pm
Exhibition dates: 10.07.26 - 01.08.26

Join me at RHODES this Thursday, 6-8pm for the private view of POOL DIARIES. I’m exhibiting 14 new works exploring the rituals of poolside life from around the world.

RHODES, 65 Great Portland Street, London W1W 7LW @rhodescontemporaryart

‘June 2nd’ 2026 - 94 x 143cm - 1,440 colour chip collage on board.

June 2nd marked a return to the twenty-four-hour format, with each colour chip representing a minute of the day: 1,440 observations unfolding across twenty-four rows. Written poolside over the course of a full day in Palm Springs, the work demanded an unusual restraint, with each hourly entry compressed into precisely sixty words. Friends arrived and departed, bottles were opened, conversations drifted, and the rhythms of leisure slowly gave way to evening and then night. Of all the details gathered that day, one remained unusually persistent: a woman swimming lengths wearing a red cap, moving through the blue like a pin fixed to a noticeboard of ideas. taken in Rhodes Contemporary Art by @nicksmith_art

Diary of a Falmingo, 2026 - 151 x 112cm - 1,932 colour chip collage on board.

This work is titled Diary of a Flamingo and forms part of my upcoming Pool Diaries exhibition. Each work in the series documents a full day beside a swimming pool, with observations and rituals woven into the artwork as time-stamped diary entries. Here, an inflatable flamingo serves as a motif for poolside leisure.

‘Beverley Hills’, 2026, 1,054 Colour Chip Collage on Heritage Conservation Board, 115 x 90cm

Beverly Hills returns to the pool that inspired my first pool diary work, created for Miami Art Week at Untitled Art Fair in 2025.

If swimming pools have personalities, the Beverly Hills Hotel pool has spent decades perfecting its own. Across the day, attendants test the water, loungers are aligned by fractions, stories circulate with questionable accuracy, and glamour arrives reassuringly late.

Throughout it all, a single leaf drifts stubbornly across the surface, quietly refusing to follow the script. The pool absorbs everything: gossip, photographs, sequins, arguments over shades of pink. By morning, it has reset itself entirely, immaculate once more, as though none of it had ever happened.

This work forms part of Pool Diaries, my upcoming solo exhibition with RHODES, opening on 9th July. Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing some of the stories behind the individual works. @rhodescontemporaryart taken in Rhodes Contemporary Art by @nicksmith_art

RHODES is pleased to present ‘Pool Diaries,’ a new body of work by leading contemporary collage artist Nick Smith.

@nicksmith_art

Developed from Smith’s ongoing exploration of swimming pools, the exhibition captures the bright, cinematic atmosphere surrounding pool culture and the aspirational worlds that gather around it. Across 14 original works, pools emerge not simply as sites of leisure, but as carefully constructed environments suspended somewhere between architecture, ritual, performance and temporary escape.

Structured through timestamped observations, ‘Pool Diaries’ follows the shifting conditions, behaviours and quiet absurdities that unfold around the pool across the course of a single day. Through close observation and subtle humour, Smith draws significance from moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed, transforming the familiar into reflections on time, presence and the peculiar intimacy of shared spaces.

Beneath the brightness and polished surfaces lies a quieter meditation on the small rituals and everyday moments that shape our lives, suggesting that some of our most meaningful experiences occur when we appear to be doing very little at all.
