'Turquoise Perpetual' by Nick Smith is one of four new works by the artist in '12:12.'

Smith began experimenting with the motif of the luxury watch - not only what it means to us as an accessory, but also what the act of counting time and letting time pass means.

🎨🏊‍♂️ Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of visiting the opening of Pool Diaries by @NickSmith_art at @rhodescontemporaryart

@nicksmith_art has established himself as one of the UK's most distinctive contemporary artists, reimagining iconic imagery through his signature colour chip technique, where colour, language and narrative combine to reward closer looking. His latest solo exhibition, is a brilliant continuation of that journey.
From a distance, the works appear to be beautiful abstract compositions inspired by swimming pools. Step closer and an entirely different story unfolds. Every piece is made from carefully arranged words documenting Nick's observations throughout each hour of the day around the pools he visited. Through these timestamped moments, he captures the changing atmosphere, conversations, behaviours and quiet details that most of us would simply overlook, transforming everyday experiences into something worth reflecting on. It's even more impressive knowing this body of work has been 18 months in the making.
It was a genuine pleasure to meet Nick, who was incredibly generous with his time, talking us through his creative process and the inspiration behind the series. We also connected over the importance of documenting moments in time.
Like Nick, I love creating little timestamps that let us look back, reflect on our journey and appreciate how far we've come.
If you're in London, I'd highly recommend visiting this exhibition before it closes. It's one of those shows that simply can't be appreciated through photographs alone. The closer you look, the more it reveals.

'Palm Springs' is in Nick Smith's ongoing solo exhibition, 'Pool Diaries.'

The artist discussing the work:
"'Palm Springs' takes its cue from the famous Kaufmann House pool, immortalised by Slim Aarons and now lodged somewhere deep within the collective imagination of Californian leisure. I have never visited the pool myself, which seemed a rather poor reason not to spend an entire day there. Across the work, breakfast drifts into lunch, lunch into drinks, and drinks into the sort of evening where someone inevitably ends up in the water fully clothed. A small cluster of yellow flowers offers a nod to Aarons’ original photograph, proof that sometimes the difference between a swimming pool and a myth is simply good composition."

Ten years ago Monica and I had nearly given up our search to find an old commercial property to convert into our ‘home in my home town’ Newquay.
Quite by chance we stumbled upon The Old Pump House and the rest is history.
We couldn’t have done any of this with the amazing @chopped.stuey our architect and @madelineinoue who was our co-developer along with Kiyo.
So - just look at it now!!!! About to go live on Airbnb for selected weeks over the summer .

RHODES is pleased to present ‘Pool Diaries,’ a new body of work by leading contemporary collage artist Nick Smith.

@nicksmith_art

Developed from Smith’s ongoing exploration of swimming pools, the exhibition captures the bright, cinematic atmosphere surrounding pool culture and the aspirational worlds that gather around it. Across 14 original works, pools emerge not simply as sites of leisure, but as carefully constructed environments suspended somewhere between architecture, ritual, performance and temporary escape.

Structured through timestamped observations, ‘Pool Diaries’ follows the shifting conditions, behaviours and quiet absurdities that unfold around the pool across the course of a single day. Through close observation and subtle humour, Smith draws significance from moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed, transforming the familiar into reflections on time, presence and the peculiar intimacy of shared spaces.

Beneath the brightness and polished surfaces lies a quieter meditation on the small rituals and everyday moments that shape our lives, suggesting that some of our most meaningful experiences occur when we appear to be doing very little at all.
