Brianna and I got to visit Mt. Blue State Park for some camping with April’s family this past weekend. Highlights include thinking Mt. Blue was a casual hike (1,800 vert!), collecting birch bark for the fire, and meeting Bing (last pic). Pretty fun to get out there and thankful for the many peaceful moments. taken in Mount Blue State Park by @nickthinks

Two mobility challenges on this Thursday. First I stumbled upon after looking for the second - pretty fun! Second is more challenging - lotta different choices can be made here. You just gotta start on your stomach while holding your ankles and then stand up. by @nickthinks

Some pins from the Massachusetts State Armwrestling Championship, representing Southern Maine Armwrestling Club. I got 1st in left amateur at 176 and 3rd for the right. Two more 3rds for left/right at 198, too. Respect to all my competitors - they brought out the best in me. by @nickthinks

Yesterday I ran in Portland’s Back Cove Backyard Ultra, with the help of Brianna, Howard, Brian, and Jason. These are the moments of complete fight, presence, and belief that I love.

While my training’s not been in the ‘ultra’ zone (16mi/week), I still wanted to attack this race 100%. I ended up running 42.7mi - the 6th longest run of my life.

Brianna arrived on site early and secured a great tent spot. Clutch. The 1st two laps were textbook. Lap 3 the heat caught up to me - my stomach started to freeze. I was able to hold on by bringing my pace down, streamlining my stops, + arriving at the start line later.

The heat got me to a point where I wasn’t sweating or digesting the water sloshing in my stomach. Arguable I overate + drank early on, but I wanted to push these limits. I felt relief at 7 hours just because 50k is a legit ultra.

As it got harder, Jason ran over to help with cooling + Howard jumped in for pacing. Howard’s positivity + attentiveness were so helpful in keeping me going. Brianna returned, too, right before the wheels fell off + I got an extra emotional boost from seeing her.

Hour 9 new cramping prevented me from jogging so I downed some raw element powder + a salt tab. I finished Yard 9 with seconds to spare + knew that Yard 10 would require a 2nd wind.

At this point the sensations were intense + consuming. My frozen stomach, the cramps… even my hearing - everything sounded like through a tunnel. Since my goal was to get DQ’d by the clock (not self-elimination), my job is just to keep thinking of solutions and believing a lap is possible. These are the moments of complete fight, presence, + belief that I love. Even after I was brought to the ground and threw up huge I believed that 2nd wind would come, but then 22 minutes into Yard 10 I bonked hard. Time to call it. Those final 2 miles were a slow walk in feeling really sick + weak.

Overall this was a great time (and my body feels oddly good now). I ran a smart race + pushed myself to the limit. Nothing was fumbled or left on the table. My team - Brianna, Howard, Brian, Jason - was amazing. Thanks for all your help and the good times on the course. I loved it. 🙏 taken in Back Cove Trail by @nickthinks
