I’ve been a little MIA around here… and for the loveliest reason. 🤍

AJ and I snuck away to Noosa for five whole days — our first trip away together for longer than two nights since having kids! 😳

And we did… not very much at all.

We rode bikes. We walked. We sat by the pool. I drew. We watched sunsets. We had early nights. We talked. We rested.

I even managed a little accidental “author moment” when I wandered into a beautiful bookshop and found a pile of books I’ve illustrated sitting there. (Obviously I had to take a photo. 😂📚)

Mostly though, we were just there. No rushing around trying to squeeze everything in. No feeling like we needed to be doing something every minute.

Turns out five quiet days was exactly what I needed.

Home now feeling rested, restored and very ready to pick up my pencils and brushes again. 🎨🤍 by @nicky_johnston

Spotted at a wedding… and onto my drawing board they go! 🎨🤍

I love capturing the little things — a fabulous dress, a favourite jacket, a splash of colour, a glass in hand… all the details that make each guest them.

Then a little watercolour magic and another wedding memory is ready to take home. ✨

I could happily paint people all day. 🥰

Two days at Westbourne Grammar (Truganina) for Book Week celebrations … and 87,000 book signings later… 😂✍️📚

What a wonderful couple of days sharing stories, drawing, talking about books and meeting SO many enthusiastic young readers.

And then there were the books to sign… so. many. books.

I love knowing those books are heading home with the kids — hopefully to be read, loved and pulled off the bookshelf again and again.

A huge thank you to @lamont_authors for arranging my visit and also to the amazing Library Teachers at Westbourne Grammar for having me and for making me feel so welcome. I loved every minute of it. 📚✨

(Although my signing hand may need a little holiday. 😂)

A double decker cubby house with two ladders and a slide going into a pool, was apparently the cubby house of choice for one group of kids at Christchurch Grammar today, as we read Cubby Hunting (written by @coralvass ) to celebrate Book Week!

Another class chose a blanket tent and a stick fort as their favourite cubby!!

So much imagination, so many drawings, and so much fun! 🤩

✏️ A little drawing, a lot of imagination! ❤️

Such a lovely time at Wyndham Library in Point Cook, drawing with kids of all ages and exploring some of the simple tricks I use when creating my own illustrations.

We drew, experimented, learnt some new skills and — most importantly — had FUN! 🎨✨

There’s never just one “right” way to draw something… and that’s where the magic happens. 💛

Apparently one just wasn’t enough… 😂❤️

At Sally + Claire’s beautiful wedding, I painted their gorgeous nieces and nephews as part of my live guest illustrations.

Then came a very lovely request…

The family loved their portraits so much that everyone wanted one! 🥹

So after the wedding, out came the paints again and I created multiple originals for the whole family to keep. 🎨✨

One of the unexpected things I love about live wedding illustration is that sometimes the paintings have a little life after the wedding too — extra copies, special requests and artworks that become keepsakes for different members of the family. 🤍

And I’m always very happy to keep painting!

Book Week always brings such beautiful conversations, and this year was no exception. Two books in particular were Under the Same Sky and The Voyage. The children found so many moments they could relate to, and it was wonderful hearing their thoughts, connections and reflections as we shared these stories together.

It also brought me back to these beautiful prints, gifted to me by the incredibly talented illustrators @nicky_johnston and Andrea Edmonds.

I feel so fortunate to have these special pieces, and even more fortunate to have the memories and moments that sit behind them. Books have a beautiful way of connecting us to each other, to experiences, and to people we are lucky enough to meet along the way ❤️ @newfrontierpublishing @newfrontierpublishinguk @ekbooksforkids by @nicky_johnston
