THE FIRST FIGHT ISSUE 03

For Boxer, Danish photographer Nicolai Howalt documented young fighters immediately before and after their first ever bouts — capturing the nerves, bruises, exhaustion and release that come with stepping into the ring for the first time.

For Howalt, the result was never really the point.

“To me they were all heroes, just for having overcome their fear and completed the fight.”

A study of vulnerability, transformation and that strange moment when a young boxer crosses the ropes and finds themselves entirely alone.

For Issue 03 of Modern Boxing Journal, we spoke to Nicolai Howalt about Boxer, the memory of his own first fight and what draws artists back to boxing time and again. by @nicolaihowalt

“The fungi-in-Petri-dish photographs are simply sublime, especially in print form. The various species of fungi show off their individual growth patterns with velvety vibrant colors that are showcased by the high quality of these printed pages.”

@nicolaihowalt

Nicolai Howalt’s ‘Boxer’ is a photographic project documenting young Danish boxers before and after their first match between 2000 and 2003. Captured under the same composition and lighting, the two portraits reveal the intense passage of time and experience that unfolds between them.

Faces marked by anxiety, tension, confidence, and fear before the match take on entirely different expressions afterward. Through these paired portraits, Howalt sought to explore boyhood, puberty, and the loss of innocence. Within the framework of boxing, these boys confront an inner battle between fear and courage, dreams and reality, boyhood and manhood. In the boxing ring, they face true solitude for the first time. Perhaps it is a rite of passage called growing up.
