I go back to Art Cologne!
Iโ€™m glad to confirm Iโ€™ll visit the 59th edition of Art Cologne at @Koelnmesse to share my favorite art with you from 5 to 8 November.
.
I cannot wait to see the artworks displayed by the art galleries I like as well as encounter some new comers for the first time. I think Art Cologne is such a refreshing art fair I like to visit every time I go. Iโ€™m always more Art enthusiast after my visit.
.
I already scrolled the list of participating art galleries. Mark your agenda and stay tuned! Iโ€™m going to - gently - spam you with great art during the period of the art fair. Iโ€™m sure you are going to like a few artworksโ€ฆ if not all of them.
.
Do you have anything you would like me to focus on?

The 2 versions of Icarus.
The art of the French artist Henri Matisse is an easy way to introduce children to art with shapes, cutting, patchworks and colours.
.
Many of his famous artworks are reunited for this exhibition. If I may choose my favorite, it would definitely go for his representation of Icarus; which stayed in my memory since my childhood. Seeing this cut-out collage in books and in photos is good, but I was happy to see it in person for the first time.
.
The version on the first photo comes from his series ensemble โ€˜Jazzโ€™. It recalls a trapeze artist in a circus or the Greek myth - maybe my favorite one from those ancient stories - showing the figure plummeting from the sky with a striking red shape on his chest, symbolizing raw life, passion, or a fatal wound. That image and several others may also refer to the risks of artistic creation, especially as a form of cultural resistance.
.
The other version on the second photo depicts a figure who has been killed by a gunshot or bomb, which is less glamorous. The yellow spots might be shell bursts evoking the tragic fate of a shot aviator. It is therefore the darkness of World War II that runs through this work that Matisse wanted to reproduce. It is one of the few cut gouaches to be still studded with pins, testifying to the precariousness and delicate, almost living materiality of this medium.
.
The artists created many artworks during his career. We all have one that comes to our mind when referring to his name. Whatโ€™s yours?

An exhibition I desperately wanted to see.
This major retrospective at @museeduluxembourg , which is the very first dedicated in France to the Mexican artist of British origin, Leonora Carrington. The exhibition brings together many artworks, spanning from her early surrealist origins in Europe to her later mystical masterpieces created in Mexico.
.
She was an artist with an insatiable curiosity. Between surrealism, mythology and esotericism, her artistic creation reflects a world in perpetual metamorphosis, where human and animal, male and female meet. She has built herself through the journey, whether inside or outside. She was an explorer of the mind and the world, always in search of new forms of knowledge.
.
She was a very complete artist, exemplary in terms of harmony and innovation; so, her art has found a unique resonance. She was a constantly evolving spiritual researcher, who has left behind a legacy that is as extraordinary as it is radical. She was highly influenced by the French group of surrealism artists; so, her artworks offer surprises and symbols to decipher, for those who know how to look carefully.
.
Iโ€™m a lot into surrealism art. Therefore, her drawings and paintings fascinates me. I think Iโ€™m not the only one being fascinated by her art. It should maybe rings a bell. Here is the painting depicting the Temptation of St. Anthony. Do you remember @Madonna โ€˜s costume during @Metgalaofcial ?

A long awaiting art exhibition.
For the first time in France, we can appreciate the visionary world of Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint, a pioneer of abstraction long kept in the shadows. The quality of the exhibition is amazing! From her intense large-scale compositions to her secret avant-garde works, her art blends color, form, and symbolism with captivating audacity.
.
Her work upended the chronology of modern art. Indeed, years before well-known names, she created bold compositions in which vivid colors, geometric shapes, and organic motifs anticipated the major currents of modern art. Spirals, circles, and beams reflect her total creative freedom and give her paintings a universal and timeless dimension.
.
She developed a radically avant-garde corpus of works nourished by theosophy and spiritualism, exploring cosmic harmony and invisible forces. The artist was clearly ahead of her time; she transcended the boundaries between art, science, and spirituality.
.
Fun fact about her art: Hilma af Klint had chosen to keep her abstract works hidden, having them sealed for twenty years after her death. Incredible!
.
I highly appreciated seeing all her artworks. I recommend the visit before the end of the exhibition. Do you plan to visit it too?

Souvenir from Art Paris.
I attended the opening of the art fair and you can easily imagine I saw great art. Among all the artworks I saw, I was happy to visit the booth of Melanie Rio Fluencyโ€™s art gallery entirely dedicated to the work of the French artist Justin Weiler.
.
The artist paints on glass. The results is impressive and the impact of his creation on the viewer is fascinating. We can stay long in front of his artworks to appreciate the lights, shadows and reflection on the surface.
.
When I look back at this photo of my reflection into one of his artworks the impact feels surreal. At some point, without noticing it, you kind of fade and disappear into a fantastical side world. Reality seems different even if I keep composure.
.
What do you think about this photo?

Enchanted Park for sculptures.
I spent some time at Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden by Tony Cragg. I knew this place existed, but itโ€™s the first time I went there. Keeping postponing the visit andโ€ฆ time fliesโ€ฆ
.
Those of you who follow me for a long time know the British artist is my favorite sculptor of all. I was not disappointed about the visit. Especially during a perfect sunny day.
.
A little bit cold weather, but with a nice blue sky leading to a perfect visit for nice photos. Everything was ideal to take the time to walk through the park for enjoying nature and appreciating art at the same time. I have to confess that I well exceeded my steps count during the visit.
.
Did you know this place?

Changing the point of view.
I had the opportunity to visit the exhibition dedicated to the German artist Rebecca Hornโ€™s art at Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden by Tony Cragg before its opening. First time for me at Wuppertal. I was happy about the visit, it was a perfect day. A little bit cold weather, but with a clear blue sky leading to a perfect visit for nice photos.
.
The exhibition is spread over 3 glass buildings inside the park; so, we can enjoy art and nature at the same time. Each room contains 3 different artworks, each of them having sufficient room for full showcase. The most impressive work I saw is her famous suspended grand piano hung upside down from the ceiling.
.
At first, we see a clean nice piano. At some point the mechanism starts, the silence breaks, everything is moving in a smashing noise that no one can ignore and sounds echoes. The movement finishes with an opened instrument that no one can use to play music anymore... Then, once the automatic performance is done, it slowly recovers his initial form like nothing happened.
.
Do you appreciate such type of art?

Letโ€™s eat that banane!
Iโ€™m sure you know this famous conceptual artwork โ€˜Comedianโ€™ by Maurizio Cattelan, which helped the artist questions the value of art. All newspapers wrote about it years ago when it was first presented by Perrotin French art gallery during Art Basel Miami. He easily made his point to a global audience thanks to extensive international press coverage about it at that time.
.
I already had the opportunity the visit several exhibitions dedicated to the Italian guyโ€™s artistic practice. Currently, French museum Centre Pompidou Metz hosts an exhibition showcasing several of his artworks that play with scale and absurdity he is well known for.
.
In addition, itโ€™s not a solo show considering his art installations and artworks are presented in dialogue with artworks made by various artists. So, visitors can also discover artworks from the Centre Pompidouโ€™s collection at the same time.
.
Would you dare eating the banana?

Delicate way of cutting materials.
I follow the artistic journey of Georgia Russell for 15 years now and Iโ€™m amazed by her evolution. Therefore, I was very happy to enter Karsten Greveโ€™s art gallery space at Cologne to discover some of the Scottish artistโ€™s recent artworks. I spent some time in front of the artworks and I came back a second time at the end of the day to appreciate the artworks once again before leaving the city.
.
Her work is the result of an accumulation of cut-outs. Repetition creates emptiness and matter. These repetitive marks create a three-dimensional surface and object. What I like with this exhibition is that she experiments with materials and explores new medium while keeping her own methodology to create art. This is fascinating.
.
This little red one under a dome made from a French book stayed in my mind. I still remember when I saw a few years ago one of her decoupage of a book written by an author with the same name of mineโ€ฆ
.
What shape do you identify?

Art can be yummy too!
Last week was full of art. Amongst my favorite artworks spotted or discovered during @artcolognefair , long time no see artwork by the American artist Peter Anton came to my mind when I tried to recap my visit. In some ways, art - like food and treats - brings people together.
.
His primary subject matter is food with an emphasis on chocolates and other sweets. The artist creates giant realistic sculptures and is best known for his bigger than life boxed chocolates. His work is characterized by its meticulous detail, vibrant colors, and ability to create a sense of both awe and seduction. The sensual nature of the works stimulates basic human needs and desires that generate cravings and passion. His work is witty, funny and transformative. You look at it and smiled and then look at it again and think.
.
Do you want some?

Color itself is subject enough.
What I like when visiting @artcolognefair is to see a lot of artworks created by many different German artists. German art lies in its originality marked by a search for its own identity and its ability to assert itself independently of foreign artistic scenes. This is what I found when looking at an artwork of Gotthard Graubner.
.
The artist transgresses the two-dimensional limits of pictorial conventions. Canvas or Nylon, stretched on foam or synthetic wadding in the manner of skins, constitute organic, bodily forms. Color is the central theme of artistic practice. In his canvases, the artist generally focuses on a unique shade, which he decomposes into multiple shades and applies in many superimposed and juxtaposed layers. The color infiltrates the support and soaks it to unite with it.
.
What does his work evoke to you?

I like artistic matching.
While walking through the aisles of @artcolognefair I was immediately attracted by the pattern displayed on the walls of the booth of @jochenhempel art gallery, which perfectly matched the work of a mid career artist with the one of a well established sculptor.
.
On the back, @bastianmuhr has the capacity to captivate the viewers with his patterns. I saw him collate live the paper on the walls. The German artist create his repetitive shapes that invite us into his graphic visual world. He regularly realizes large site-specific works making exhibition spaces his own or in public settings. This kind of immersive exercise is fascinating.
.
On the foreground, Stephan Balkenhol is my kind of sculptor. He strives to re-ground figurative sculpture. I like his works with all the marks on the wood that he decides to leave visible. His sculptures and his wooden reliefs constitute a particular world, populated by ordinary simple people, with expressionless faces, a face revealing no emotion.
.
What do you think about the combination of the two artists?
