❤️🌬️✨

Ahí vi morir a Violetta Valery.
Todavía no sabía bien quién (o qué?) era yo.

When I was eight years old, I sat in a theatre in Southern Chile and watched Violetta Valery from “La Traviata” die.
I didn’t know yet who I was.
But opera knew what to do with my body: make it listen.

Twenty years later, I have been accepted to the doctoral programme at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama, starting in September 2026.

My research is called “A More-than-Human Opera”.

It asks what trans* experience can know about opera’s apparatus, the knowledge that accumulates in a body that was never supposed to be there. It works with AI, with immersive performance, with the figures who witness without dying.

It is, in every sense, the project I have been building my whole life.

GRACIAS @aniluz , @claudia_matus_nde @clasicanoconvencional @centrogam @fundacionmecenas @f.matamoros_ y @proescenica @centrode.estudioscuir the #InterdisciplinaryBioSocioCulturalResearchNetwork, and @centrojusticiaeducacional by @nicolavilander

the emotion of coming back from @classicalnext 2026 in Budapest is enormous.

I travelled representing @clasicanoconvencional , the chilean collective that took home the innovation award last year. And what we kept finding, room after room, was Chile not as footnote but as centre of gravity.
@seberrazuriz on the jury. @camilaroayanez from @foji_chile on a panel. @svergaramusic closing the last night. + a fantastic and diverse delegation representing the beauty the Chilean classical music panorama has to offer.

A strange thing, to watch a Latin American country move like this.
not as curiosity.
not as quota.
but as a constellation.
all global ears on us, and on the hard patient work we carry on back home.

@classicalnext is one of the few spaces where the sector admits its frames are too narrow. where practices that interrogate the canon rather than redecorate it find real interlocutors. it is also where my project #AMoreThanHumanOpera, the binary operatic canon norm, audiencism, found more than generous conversations.

That thinking grows from the soil CNC has been turning over for years. And which I first entered as that: one more person in the middle of the audience.

Gracias to @chilemusicaoficial for sheltering our whole team. to @matdgutierrez for trusting me with this task. To every delegate who showed up with humour and effort.

To the late dinners, the spilled coffees, the full rooms, the food each stand laid out to calm our hungers and our thirst :)

A notebook full of names.

Thousands of emails.
Beautiful places.

An infinite but beautiful tiredness.

💜🎶see you next year! by @nicolavilander

Back in Chile, still breathing in what happened at @guildhallschool a couple of days ago performing “Mister, the earrings look too good on you”. This piece began as the final presentation for my Master’s in @educacion_uc @centrojusticiaeducacional but what started as an academic exercise has since become something else: a hybrid, a monster, a contagion. I witness its unfolding with love and respect. It opens as if it were a research paper… but it slips, leaks. Audiences reshape the space. Fabric begins to sob. Nostalgia folds into bodies.
What forces act through me, and despite me, as I live my gender transition within a Chilean elite school, as a teacher? For three years, I’ve been logging sensations, emotions, and perceptions, trying to trace what moves, pierces, and unsettles. I focus on how the Secret and the Binary Gender Norm (@claudia_matus_nde @valentina.riberi) operate as affective forces in this process. Through writing, vocal practice, and physical composition, I’ve worked to embody these affects, letting them shape the narrative structure of the piece. It’s not a story told from beginning to end, it’s a vibration. A soft rupture. This last performance was profoundly moving. The audience’s response reminded me that performance can hold complexity in ways theory cannot. It can reveal hidden narratives, ones that matter for how we imagine collective, socially engaged practices. Thank you to the Performance Studies Network Conference for offering the platform for this work to live. To the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for physically and emotionally holding the piece. To Amy Blier-Carruthers, for your trust and interest on my work. To @aliciaarriado, for your exquisite textile work that weeps and breathes. To Josselyn Ryder, for the beautiful pictures.
To @johnnygoodform, for your unwavering support, generosity, and friendship 🤍

To Patricio Luco, Vero Walbaum, and Kate Ingamells at The Grange, for your deep trust and support.

And to all my colleagues and compañerxs. Thank you for recognising this piece not as a personal act, but as a collective, urgent, and shared one.

2017 by @nicolavilander

Colegas artistas, docentes, alumnes, audiencias.

Gracias suelos que acogen y luces que dan calor. Gracias sonidos y cantos y danzas.

Kiitos suomi friends and family.

👁️🌳👂🏽 “The Act of Contemplation” is a site-specific physical theatre performance based on the Arts Collection and the architecture of The Grange School as stimuli. It takes place in the John Jackson Quad and MAD Building Area in a promenade format. Here, a group of three alumni and a drama teacher journey around Mario Irarrázabal’s new sculpture ‘TIME’ and the various bodies surrounding it, whether human or non-human.

Performers: J. Espinosa, Antonia Carreño, Samuel Garrido, Nicola Vilander
