ahahahahahahaha lolllllllll omg Charles de Gaulle, which is the worst airport in the UNIVERSE, is trying to clean their shit up (yay?) but can you imagine the signage replacement process? Can you imagine the meetings about this? The signage union will have its own journey but the "Letter E" union and the "Letter F" union are going to have a whole contretemps, the ENTIRE letter "T" union is going to go on strike, "L'alphabet majuscule" union is going to drive tractors through Roissy... I actually might book a flight through there that day just to see what happens.

The wildest thing about all of this is that this whole nightmare was an avoidable thing. Consonants in most languages sort of rhyme in terms of where they fit in your mouth — but with vowels, the written (in any language) letters I and E never do, and O is a false friend (Ö being a wicked Icelandic cousin, and the proximity of french U to “ee," Icelandic æ being the same as English "i" etc. etc., Arabic 'ayn pretending to be a vowel...) so don’t organize ur airport like that. The number of times I’ve seen non-Francophone families, late for their plane, asking for help and the most beautiful airport temptresses and temptors in the most beautiful uniforms, clearly octo-lingual, sartorially judgemental but practically disengaged, pretending not to understand the difficulties of the difference between E and I, and basically ruining people's vacations & family reunions...

Also if you're in the union for the letter L and not on strike this weekend, will you let me know because I'm still trying to get 🇫🇷citizenship because my grandmother was born in Lille and she has triple membership k thx. by @nicomuhly

Such a pleasure to host the choristers of @christchurchoxford for an afternoon at the studio before their concert tomorrow @carnegiehall (details in bio!) - they recorded some pieces on the piano and celesta, spent a bit of time with ProTools, and had an impromptu rehearsal as well as some excellent local delights in the form of chocolate babka. by @nicomuhly

NEW YORK! This Sunday.
⠀
Christ Church Cathedral Choir comes to Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. 500 years of music — Taverner (including 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘢, the best thing in the world, and the “𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯 𝘞𝘺𝘯𝘥𝘦” Mass, the other best thing in the world), a bit of Judith Weir, Walton, and the New York première of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯, a big new piece I wrote for them.

I'm on two very different podcasts this week talking about this that and the other, but mainly about sacred music.

I always forget that it's a little odd that I write so much of the stuff, and these two are a deeper dive into the back-story & context. by @nicomuhly

Ten years of Keep in Touch. A reason to listen twice.

Nico Muhly’s writing influenced Nadia Sirota’s playing. Her input influenced his writing. Keep in Touch lets us hear that exchange in two forms.

On Nico’s Speaks Volumes, Nadia’s viola sits within electronics made with Valgeir Sigurðsson, including the small sounds of her own playing. For the version released in 2016, Chris Thompson translated that sound-world into parts for Nadia and Alarm Will Sound.

The 2016 album pairs that ensemble version with Nico Muhly’s Viola Concerto. Two works shaped by a collaboration between composer and player.

Hear the original, then the ensemble version. Do the same gestures feel different to you?

Portraits: Nico Muhly by Ana Cuba; Nadia Sirota by Samantha West. Album artwork: Alex Sopp.

The conversation winds through Reich, Glass, Taverner, his recent albums with the Tallis Scholars (@tallisscholars) and the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford (@magdcollchoir), the wisdom of Eddie Murphy’s RAW, Ghostbusters 2, Richard III, the Big Conversation around the role of text in music, decorating vs. architecture, traveling heavy, and what he likes about music.
