To say I’m excited about this is an understatement!!

Coming soon….meet our new team member Nicholas Hawkes!

Nick is the perfect complement to what we already have here at Summit, and will continue to foster our efforts to help each, and every patient be empowered recover and perform!

A couple of quotes from his bio below, full list of certifications, etc., on the website.

“From the Navy to the mat, from the gym floor to the treatment room, my life has been driven by one mission: to help people move better, feel better, and perform at their best inside and outside the gym.

I grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later called San Diego, California home. Along the way, I served in the United States Navy, an experience that taught me the value of discipline, service, and adaptability. These are traits that continues to shape my work today.

I have spent over two decades, immersed in performance coaching and manual therapy. My learning has included a variety of training to help each individual reach their goals. Some of the certifications I hold: CrossFit level 4 Coach, VM Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. Certifications from ART, FRC, Fascial Manipulation, PRI , ELDOA etc etc.

If you’re looking for guidance that blends science, experience, and heart, I would be honored to work with you. ……Nick“ taken in Summit Sports and Spine by @nicvictus

Efficient and Effective 2

Thank you to all the firefighters for keeping us safe and letting us get together for the second edition of E&E.

We started class a little bit earlier this time around and had (2) case studies:

@nicvictus was our “real-time” case study and model, and everyone in attendance, Nick included, was shocked at how much he changed throughout the day during and after each break out lab.

At the end of the day, our actual case study @drakemaloney, got to experience a beginning-to-end session while attendees got to learn the value of an “order of operations”, or as I teach it, it is simply called “The Flow.”

Thank you attendees and I look forward to hearing about the positive changes both your professional practices and your client outcomes! by @nicvictus

“Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any how”- Viktor Frankl
Yesterday @holdenrethwill and myself completed @adventure16 24 hour #3peakschallenge. But we did it with the “why” of fundraising for #parkinsonsdisease research through the @michaeljfoxorg foundation. With all of your support we raised over 5k!! Thank you all who contributed to the cause through donating or other support. If you still want to donate check the link in my bio.

During this 24 hour endeavor we:
-climbed San Jacinto via the Marion Peak trail, San Gorgonio via the South Fork, and Mt Baldy via the Devil’s Backbone -gained 12,657 feet in elevation -covered 47 miles - drove 144 miles between trailheads
-broke both of my @pariaoutdoorproducts trekking poles
-destroyed my feet
-filled my heart with gratitude from all of the support.
Special thanks to @holdenrethwill for undertaking this one with me. I am grateful to call you a friend. @connor_b3ll showed some true grit by nipping at my heels the entire time and completing all 3 peaks alongside us. And to @nannerscan for her support. She selflessly volunteered her time to drive from trailhead to trailhead and then climbed the last peak with us.
This was such a rewarding challenge. Now it’s time to recover and figure out the next adventure. Onward! by @nicvictus

Twenty one years ago I became a father at the immature age of twenty; A kid having a kid. There is no handbook to parenting, as a young parent or even one with more than 20 years of life experiences to reflect and guide from. Some things that I have learned over the past 21 years and especially the last 6 when he came to live with me are these:
1- accept them for who they naturally want to be. This may seem like common sense, but when you are trying to raise a functional human, sometimes what you feel is best from your perspective is not what is best for them.
2- your job as a parent is not to make your children safe. Your job is to make your children resilient and as adaptable as possible. Prepare them to successfully venture outside the safety of your kingdom in search of their own dragons to slay and lands to conquer.
3- raise them so that you not only love them, but you actually like them. Raise them so you would gladly sit down and have a whiskey together and talk like friends

I am so grateful for the human Oakley is becoming and the work he is putting In to become who he wants to be. Cheers @czar_oaks , and happy 21st! taken in Raised By Wolves by @nicvictus

Yesterday I got outside and climbed Mount Langley, which stands at 14,026 feet, which is just 480 feet less than Mount Whitney. This was a beautiful hike that provides great views and multiple lakes with the last two miles providing the majority of the elevation gain with a mix of soul sucking soft sand and scrambling over boulders at over 13,000 feet. The end was a swift kick in the junk.
I am hiking to train for the #threepeakschallenge to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s research on behalf of my mom and @holdenrethwill’s grandpa. #hiking #sequoianationalpark #mountlangley #trainingmiles #mountlangleyinaday #inyonationalforest by @nicvictus

Stephen Burchette, trail-name Mountain Sage, is one of the veterans I worked with this past week as part of the Veteran Summer Sports Olympics. Stephen has Parkinson’s Disease, which made working with him this week that much more impactful and inspiring.
Stephen only has 180 miles left to complete the 2,200 mile long Appalachian Trail. He says that while he is on the trail, his symptoms subside because of his constant movement and serves as a great reminder that no matter what our situation may be, movement and a dedicated mindset is essential. This video is what Stephen says to each person he meets while on the trail.

Here are a couple training hikes from the past couple weekends. Lone peak in SLC, pretty cool as I just walked out my sisters front door and hiked one of the tallest peaks in Utah. The 2nd is of Gorgonio via the south fork trail and is one of the routes we will take during are #3peakchallenge raising money for Parkinson’s research . Get outside and go adventure and explore. There may come a time when something takes the ability to move away from you, don’t take that ability for granted. by @nicvictus

Assessment is the beginning of everything. - what do you want to achieve?
- what is the baseline you are starting from?
- what tweaks does your engine need?
- what skills need to be acquired/developed to be successful?
- how do you need to fuel?
I have never been a big cyclist, so today’s ride was skill acquisition and exploration based. Basically I just needed to get time in the saddle and have fun riding. Mission accomplished.

You may be the sum of all your parts, but all those parts still need to move and function independently for you to be the best that you can be. Focused mobility work is strength training for your individual pieces, which helps create resiliency and options when you tie it all together.

These are clips from our Mind-muscle class with a focus upper body mobility bias. If you are an Invictus member or just visiting San Diego, come check is out! Next class is at 6pm tonight and Invictus Downtown.
