A fangirl? Me?

I was happier and more excited than I look here I just didn’t get any sleep the night before lol. Hailee’s always been on my list to meet. I was shocked Fan Expo announced her recently but wasn’t sure about going due to some family stuff. I decided to go the night before and am so glad I did. She was so enthusiastic and generous with her spirit and energy. Even though I’m a huge Kate Bishop and Spidergwen fan (and her work as Vi is awesome too) and I’ve seen some of her other movies I really didn’t know too much about her /ever watched any interviews. So it was really cool to attend her panel and “get to know” her a little bit. She is so down to earth and genuine. I’ve always felt she brings a lot of presence and life to her characters, and I think that stands true for her self. She’s unique and it was cool to see that. Not that celebrities exist for us, but its a bonus to see the person behind the character you appreciate also checking out to be a solid spirit.

(Sorry for the gross pics!) but a PSA

I wasn’t sure if I should make this post, as I wasnt sure if I was being overly dramatic or not, but I wanted to share with my fellow Cosplayers a smol PSA.

I went to Cosplay Repair to get my foam ankle bracelet more securely attached around my ankle (my little magnet wasn’t holding) so they used a glob of hot glue and I was just going to cut it off at the end of the con day.

In order to make that glob of hot glue dry faster, someone used this spray on it. They asked if they could and I said yes. I know it’s not organic skincare but I thought a quick little spray wouldn’t hurt anything.

I might be one of the few not in the know but this spray can cause cold burns.

I screamed when it was sprayed (and it was sprayed right up to my skin and for longer than a spritz) and I should have immediately moved my ankle but I thought it was going to be a quick moment of discomfort and I’d be tough about it.

It only took minutes for the red splotch to appear in first pic and the next day I had blisters.

I went to First Aid shortly after leaving cosplay repair and they cleaned it, applied burn cream and a bandage.

I went back to Cosplay Repair today to take a picture of the spray so I knew exactly what was used, and to let them know what happened - thinking they would want to know so this didn’t happen to anyone else.

I spoke with someone who wasn’t the person doing the spraying but who was present at the time. While I was asked if I was ok, it was more or less shrugged off.
The person there said it was ““just air” , it could have been from the cold because the can is cold, and that it shouldnt be used on skin. He also mentioned he doesn’t have fingerprints anymore because of “crafting battle wounds” or whatnot (I’m paraphrasing).

I was kind of confused why this wasn’t a bigger deal to him so I walked away processing. In hindsight I thought it was really irresponsible not to take this seriously and ask who did it so he could advise them not to do it again, or advise the whole of the volunteer staff. Unless he was going to do this and just didn’t verbalize that to me .

2022 Cosplay recap. I’m so grateful I got to have this much fun. For a long time cosplay was something other people did and I think I held myself back for a long time because of a perfectionist attitude or not having enough confidence, like you hear from a lot of people. Since middle school I have always created and modified my clothing and aesthetics, even surroundings. My altars became art installations. I did a lot of spontaneous witchy shoots with friends when we would hang out in the woods. I adore making my own original creations to wear to concerts. But it’s also really exhilarating turning into your favorite characters too, and like most of you I feel really passionately about them. This isn’t my first year cosplaying but it became a bigger priority for me and it’s been absolutely fulfilling. I live with chronic illness and for a while there wasn’t a lot going on externally. There were some years that were like the winter of my life. So it’s meant a lot to navigate this space again, and fashion, aesthetics and shape shifting has always been a staple in expressing myself and existing. I really covet all the opportunities that exist in this realm, and the connections that have also come from it. I don’t know how the continuation of this hobby will unfold in the next year but I’m grateful for what I’ve had the chance to do and do look forward to more 🙏💗🥂🎊
