Garment-centric Interdisciplinary Artist ✂️🧵🪡
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Download All
Nika Feldman, @nikabilt, is a garment-centric interdisciplinary artist whose practice is defined by intentional and methodical acts of unmaking, be it through repetitive cutting, ripping, or deconstruction. Feldman uses salvaged clothes, which act as both subject and medium to address intersecting issues of impermanence, grief, identity, and transformation. As an artist, Feldman positions herself as an activator and mediator.

We’re excited to share Feldman’s work in The Art of ReUse, where you can see how one creates beautiful and mesmerizing art from salvaged clothing through a subtractive process. Feldman’s process is contextualized through three concepts: sartorial sabotage, schmatte prowess, and feminist chutzpah, which locates her practice within a framework based on gender, socioeconomic background, and cultural heritage.

The Art of ReUse is a sustainable fashion exhibition that provides an in-depth exploration into ReUse and sustainability through art, fashion, and design. Comprised of four elements: gallery exhibition,  pop-up boutique,  fashion show, and public programming (workshops and a panel discussion), invites and inspires audiences to incorporate sustainability into their everyday lives.

The Art of ReUse On View: January 9th - February 14th

- Pop-Up Boutique: Available in-person and online throughout exhibition.

- Fashion Show: January 24th | 3pm - 5pm tickets available!!!

- Fashion Show Reception: January 24th | 5pm - 7pm free to attend

- Workshops & Panel Discussion: January 31st | 10am - 4:30pm.

Thanks @newmexicowomeninthearts for adding me to your registry! Having spent most of my life as a somewhat transitory person, I am happy to reflect on the fact that I have lived in New Mexico longer than any other place in my adult life. I have just passed 7 years of being here and hope to continue making this my home into the future if possible.

Many thanks to Joelle Mendoza @_messtiza_ for the thoughtful article @hyperallergic out now! ✍️

The article shares words and images of each person’s work from our thesis exhibition: Beyond Mastery. 🎓

About my work, Mendoza writes, "Interdisciplinary artist Nika Feldman is interested in making visible the unseen exploitation of land and labor in textile and fashion production. Her haunting hanging installation of white t-shirts, titled 'Kriah and the Hungry Ghosts,' explores Jewish tradition in which holes are ripped in clothing to illustrate grief/grieving. 'Footnotes of Atrocity' is another part of a larger trilogy titled 'Unmaking: A Coded Call,' and all these works explore her concepts of sartorial sabotage, schmatte prowess, and feminist chutzpa".

Not a bad way to kick off Women’s Week, in the pages of The Provincetown Independent, pick up your copy while supplies last ;)

Thanks Elspeth Slayter for taking the time to ask the right questions and for caring enough to write an article against the grain of expectations.

For those of you who aren’t local you can read the article online here…

This muscle tank I made about five years ago. I only have a few left and will have them for sale at my upcoming show, That's What She Said @womencrafts from 9/11 - 10/4, while supplies last!
100% cotton, discharge printed
Sizes: XL(6), L(4), M(3), S(3).

The graphic was created from my '64 Buick Le Saber, one of my first true love affairs. At 23 years old, I learned how to work on the car myself before taking it on a cross-country trip with a girlfriend that lasted for 6 months, during which time we basically lived in the car day and night.

On the graphic, the text written above the car is a saying I learned about while on the road. My addition is the text written below the car.

A menopausal baptism of sorts. Hand embroidered t-shirt with a self-created portmanteau for this transitional phase of life, riffing off the words: climacteric, terror, and terrific.

Don’t miss this and other text-based textile work at my upcoming show, That’s What She Said @womencrafts with an opening reception this Friday, September 11th from 6-8 pm.
