Photos from “Note 1.2” photo-essay

An Extract from “Note 1.2; Building Home: HASPE NP 16”🔻🔻🔻

…And I, amid contradictions, pass through again and again. The former belonging, that sweet belonging, the one you thought would never fade away, can no longer be rebuilt. The sense of belonging is like a slippery, sudsy bar of soap—just when you think you have it in your grasp, it slips through your fingers, shooting out and leaping beyond your hands. Between hope and the sense of belonging, there is a perpetual oscillation, a kind of synthesis. In fact, these two are in a constant tug-of-war. The sense of belonging, if it exists, is ultimately a construct. When you leave a place, it ceases to be yours. To dwell again in a home, a third language is required: a language that is neither the language of the home nor the language of the place you have immigrated to. To approach that home, I can no longer step toward it with the eyes of my former self. I have changed, and so has the home. Now, whenever I glance at or muse upon that house, I do so through the shadow of all the days I’ve been absent. And this, precisely, demands another kind of knowing: a third language born of absence and longing—a language that reads not only the spatial transformations of the home but also the altered choreography of human relations within it. The silent codes of intimacy, memory, and care have shifted; their meanings are no longer fixed but performative, elusive. To dwell in this reconfigured space—both bodily and affectively—requires a language attuned to the fragile textures of present experience, a language that resists the weight of inherited grammar and instead speaks in whispers of change and becoming. In this third language, without style, in a primitive manner—just as I don’t know what to do with “the blue I-beams”—I am always uncertain, fumbling in search of building a new home that will let me settle and through which I can come to know myself. For this reason, I do not rebuild the home; rather, I construct it anew, from the ground up.

A flip-through of "Notes 1.2; Building Home: HASPE NP 16", the second part of the long-term project “Notes”, which explores the experience of diaspora.

Note 1.2 is a photo-essay that explores diaspora through language, memory, and belonging. Combining photographs with personal prose, it reflects on how migrants negotiate the loss, transformation, and translation of home across time and distance. Revisiting intimate spaces from my childhood, the work examines hope as a way of imagining belonging beyond place, suggesting that home is not rebuilt but continually reinterpreted through memory, language, and lived experience.

📌 The photo-essay was exhibited as part of "If I Trace Home…" at Didar Art Gallery, from 29 May to 19 June 2026.
The exhibition was co-curated by Roozbeh Maleki and me, and explored the idea of home and the ways in which it is remembered, experienced, and reimagined. (www.didarartgallery.com) @didar.artgalley @roozbehmaleki

۲» در نمایشگاه If I Trace Home…

Ever since leaving the home of my childhood, each return has altered the distance between myself and my belonging to it in ways I cannot grasp: now drawing near, now receding again. Through these long years of migration in Tehran, I have begun to think that perhaps what binds me— and probably other migrants too — to the possibility of belonging is hope. “Note 1.2” is at once a personal essay — a seeking— and a conceptual proposition on belonging: the thought that hope is perhaps the grammar through which the migrant is still able to imagine the re-construction of belonging. Yet such imagining can emerge only through the translation of spaces, memories, and silences; a trembling imagining, fugitive and fragile.

My language in “Note 1.2” resembles my relation to belonging itself: hesitant, unsteady, almost unlearned. At times it turns earnest, at times playful; at others, it drifts toward something resembling poetry.

An Extract from Note 1.1: The People I met on the Border🔻🔻🔻

... I began the note by writing about stuttering to prime your mind for another kind of stutter_ one drawn straight from my lived experiences. But before diving into that, it might be wise to address another issue that, I now suspect (and I use «suspect» deliberately, as I offer no definitive claims), has become one of my preconceptions about the immigrant status. Throughout my years of studying diaspora, I have been consistently preoccupied with one question: At what point does an individual become an immigrant? From the moment they suddenly find themselves in a new country, realizing they are in an unfamiliar world where everything must now be translated between two semiotic (!) systems? From the moment they step off the plane at the destination airport? From the moment the plane crosses the border? From when the plane takes off and rises above the homeland? From when the airplane doors close? From when they get into the car and head to the airport? From the moment they start bidding goodbye to friends and kith and kin? From when they dive into the daunting task of sorting through their belongings, deciding what to toss, what to keep, what to gift, and what to sell? Or from when they pen their resignation letter? Honestly, if you ask me, none of these moments mark the transition. To me, a person becomes an immigrant when their decision to migrate is final. That is what my experience has shown me. Shortly after deciding to migrate for a research program, I began to notice shifts in how I perceived my surroundings. I felt that my attachments were undergoing transformation, leaving me with a split perception of the world... .

Note 1.1 is a bilingual photo-zine (English–Persian), independently written and published in 2024. The zine traces the beginning of migration—not merely before crossing borders, but even before filling out forms—the moment when the decision to leave has already taken hold, when the thought of departure has dug in and will not let go.
As the first installment of a long-term project connecting diaspora theory with photography, this zine presents a personal reflection on migration through a photo-essay format. My choice to write outside the academic sphere stems from the belief that, in a contemporary world shaped by “mobility” and “displacement”, diaspora studies should not remain confined to library shelves, but should be made more accessible and tangible, engaging more closely with the everyday and personal experiences of migration.
This project, then, is less about discipline than about dialogue—bridging theory and everyday life, while deliberately stepping away from the strictures of scholarship and the perfectionism of photography. It opens a freer, more intimate space to think about diaspora.

📌 This zine was first exhibited at the “Tasvir Archive: A Research Exhibition on Contemporary
Iranian Image-based Art” at the Northlight Gallery, University of Arizona, from September
6 to November 2024 ,1.
