🇸🇸 SOUTH SUDANESE POLITICAL COMMENTATOR REMAINS IN UAE DETENTION ONE YEAR AFTER ARREST

Samuel Peter Oyay, a South Sudanese political commentator, has remained in detention in the United Arab Emirates for one year without publicly disclosed charges, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Oyay was arrested on September 30, 2025, by Emirati security personnel in civilian clothing at his home in Dubai, in front of his four children. HRW says the officers searched the home for approximately two hours but did not show his family an arrest warrant or explain the legal basis for his detention.

According to an informed source cited by HRW, Oyay was allowed to contact his family about two weeks after his arrest. His whereabouts were reportedly not disclosed to relatives for approximately five months.

On February 24, 2026, Oyay reportedly told an informed source that he was being held at Al-Wathba Prison. He was reportedly transferred to another prison on March 3.

HRW says Emirati authorities have not disclosed the legal basis for his arrest to his family.

Oyay had been known for his political commentary on South Sudanese affairs, including criticism of political developments in South Sudan.

The case raises questions about due process, access to legal representation, transparency of detention, and the rights of political commentators and journalists.

🇸🇸 SOUTH SUDAN | FIVE CANDIDATES & A NEW POLITICAL SCENE

Is South Sudan really entering the electoral competition phase?

By Lilian Rizk
September 26, 2026

South Sudan’s political landscape appears to be entering a new phase, with five prominent names announcing or confirming their intention to compete in the presidential race scheduled for December 22, 2026:

1. Salva Kiir Mayardit SPLM- IG
2. Cornelius Kon Nguo United Democratic National Front (NUDF)
3. Tijwok Hather Agwet Independent candidate
4. Dr. Issa Mzamel Sebte Mikelili National Patriotic Movement (NPM)
5. Peter Mayen Majungdit Liberal People’s Party (PLP)

Important: Announcing an intention to run does not mean a candidate has been officially approved. The National Election Commission has yet to publish the final presidential candidate list.

The bigger question is no longer simply who is running?

Has voter registration begun?
Can candidates campaign nationwide?
Will citizens have meaningful access to the ballot?
Can the electoral process be managed transparently and securely?

If the December 22 election proceeds as planned, South Sudan could face a political environment increasingly shaped by campaigns, programs and votes rather than transitional agreements and power-sharing.

The real test is not the number of candidates it is whether a credible electoral process can be built before election day. by @niloticimages

🇸🇸 SOUTH SUDAN AT UNGA81 | BEYOND DISPLACEMENT

At the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Amb. Cecilia Adeng delivered South Sudan’s statement, highlighting an important idea: South Sudanese abroad are not only a diaspora shaped by displacement they are a national resource.

The story of South Sudan’s basketball team, the Bright Stars, demonstrates what is possible when South Sudanese from different countries and continents come together under one flag.

Under the leadership of Luol Deng and the South Sudan Basketball Federation, the team reached the FIBA Basketball World Cup and later the Olympic Games showing the world another image of South Sudan: talent, discipline, unity and excellence. 🇸🇸🏀

That same principle can extend far beyond sport.

Doctors can strengthen healthcare.
Engineers can contribute to infrastructure.
Academics can strengthen education.
Entrepreneurs can invest and create jobs.
Technology professionals can support the digital economy.
Professionals abroad can mentor the next generation.

The message is clear:

South Sudan needs its people at home and abroad.

Bring the knowledge.
Bring the experience.
Bring the investment.
Bring the networks.

And when physical return is not possible, skills and expertise can still contribute to nation-building.

The Bright Stars showed that South Sudanese talent scattered across the world can unite under one national purpose.

The same spirit can help build the country.

South Sudan’s greatest resource is ultimately its people. 🇸🇸

The statement also reaffirmed South Sudan’s support for peace in Sudan, peaceful engagement on outstanding South Sudan–Sudan issues including Abyei, and the common African position on reform of the UN Security Council.

From displacement to contribution. From diaspora to development. From talent to nation-building. by @niloticimages

🕊️ IN LOVING MEMORY OF GENERAL JOSEPH LAGU YANGA 🇸🇸 | November 21, 1931 – October 27, 2026

With profound sadness, we mourn the passing of General Joseph Lagu Yanga, a founding leader of the Anya-Nya 1 liberation movement and former President of the High Executive Council of the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region. He passed away at the age of 94 following a long illness.

A liberation hero, military leader, and pioneer of South Sudan’s struggle for self-determination, General Lagu played a historic role in the Anya-Nya 1 movement and the 1972 Addis Ababa Peace Agreement, which ended the First Sudanese Civil War and granted southern Sudan regional autonomy.

His leadership helped shape a defining chapter in the history of South Sudan. His contributions to the liberation struggle and his dedication to the cause of southern Sudanese self-determination will remain part of our national history.

Today, we remember a man whose life was intertwined with the struggle for freedom, peace, and dignity for the people of Southern Sudan.

Though he is gone, his legacy will continue to live in the memories of generations to come.

May his soul rest in eternal peace. 🕊️

Our deepest condolences go to his family, loved ones, and the people of South Sudan. 🇸🇸 by @niloticimages
