Honoured to be selected as one of 10 international finalists for Design Parade, the product design competition held at Villa Noailles in Hyères, France, from 25 to 28 June. Now in its 20th year, Design Parade has shaped much of what we understand as the emerging design landscape in Europe, with a jury chaired by Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren of Front Design, alongside a panel of leading voices from the international design world. At its heart, the festival is a celebration of cultural heritage and the honoring of craft as a living practice, values that sit close to everything we do.

Rooted – Where Tradition and Modernity Come Together
The Rooted vase from the Kami collection forms a harmonious bridge between Kurdish and Japanese design. Inspired by the traditional Faranji vest from the Hawraman region, this sculptural piece transforms a symbol of warmth and function into an elegant work of art.
With a branching form reminiscent of the organic growth of trees, the design embodies connection and resilience. The deep, earthy tones of sustainable materials, finished with luxurious Urushi lacquer, reflect the purity of nature.

Crafted by Skinship I スキンシップ I اللَّمْس - Urushi Atelier Netherlands – Dave van Gompel & Mamiko Masumura – this vase pays tribute to Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, where balance, simplicity, and harmony come together. A timeless platform for floral compositions, where tradition and innovation meet.

للوهلة الأولى، تبدو المنحوتة كأنها تابوتٌ مهيب، صامتٌ وحامٍ، لكنّها ليست مكانًا للنهاية، بل حُجرةٌ للانتظار، معلّقةٌ بين ما مضى وما لم يأتِ بعد. سطحها المغلق يخفي ما في داخلها، كأن طفلًا احتمى في جوفها من عنف العالم، واضطجع في هدوءٍ عميق، منتظرًا اليوم الذي يصبح فيه الخارج آمنًا من جديد.

حين تنتهي الحرب، يمكننا أن نفتحها.

لعلّ مفتاحًا حقيقيًا أو متخيّلًا ينتظر في مكانٍ ما، مفتاحًا يستطيع أن يحرّر الحالم من سباته. وحتى يأتي ذلك اليوم، يبقى السؤال معلّقًا بيننا: هل نوقظ النائم، أم نترك الحلم مستمرًا في نومه؟

هنا يتحوّل الحزن الخاص إلى ذاكرةٍ عامة، ويصبح الانتظار نفسه مكانًا يمكن للآخرين أن يقفوا فيه. لا لكي ينظروا إلى ما في الداخل، بل لكي يشعروا بما لا يمكن رؤيته؛ بالخوف، والفقد، والأمل الهشّ الذي يبقى حيًا حتى في أكثر الأزمنة قسوة.

في هذه المنحوتة، تصبح اللغة مأوى. فالحروف ليست كلماتٍ مكتوبة على سطحها، بل تتحوّل إلى أعمدةٍ وجدرانٍ وسقف، حتى تصبح عمارة الحروف صورةً لعمارة الانتظار. إن عبارة «أيقظني حين تنتهي الحرب» لا تُقرأ فقط، بل تسكن جسد المنحوتة نفسها.

وعلى جلد البرونز الداكن، تتبعثر الحروف الكوفية كأنها شظايا ذاكرة أو نجومٌ ضلّت طريقها. بعضها يُرى، وبعضها يختفي، وبعضها لا يظهر إلا لمن يعرف كيف يصغي إلى صمت الحروف. وكالذاكرة، لا يبقى كل شيء؛ فشيءٌ يظل، وشيءٌ يتلاشى، وشيءٌ علينا أن نعيد بناءه من جديد.

لا تمنح المنحوتة جوابًا، ولا تعد بنهايةٍ واضحة. إنها تدعونا فقط إلى البقاء مع المجهول، وإلى أن نتأمل معنى الانتظار؛ أن ننتظر عالمًا يستطيع فيه النائم، في يومٍ ما، أن يفتح عينيه، ويجد أن الحرب قد انتهت.

A Chamber of Waiting
*
At first sight, the sculpture resembles a sarcophagus, solemn and protective. Yet it is not a place of ending, but a chamber of waiting, suspended between what has passed and what is yet to come.

Inside, a child seems to have taken shelter from the violence outside.

When the war is over, we can open it.

The inscription Wake me up when the war is over is woven into the sculpture through an early Kufic alphabet, developed by Hozan Zangana with typographer Thomas Milo in 2013. The letters become its walls, beams, and roof: the architecture of language becomes the architecture of waiting.

The sculpture offers no answer. It simply asks us to remain with uncertainty, and to wait for the moment when the sleeper can finally awaken. by @niloufarashtiani
