(🥂link in bio) Just because a city has a lot of wine bars, or wine shops, or even wine fans, doesn’t mean it has a great “wine scene”. You need diversity and quality of wine, service, knowledge/education, importers, distributors, and healthy competition to change wine culture in a city. And the wines and wine bars have to be, you know, good.

That’s 🥳 finally happening in Mexico City, where there are not just dozens of fantastic wine bars and bottle shops, but better selection and service everywhere, from cantinas to fine dining. (When the gov’t shifts its insane—and insanely high—ad valorem tax to an ad quantum model that doesn’t disproportionately reward cheap industrial production, it’ll get even better.)

So I wrote about 10 favorite wine bars & various other players, at @wineenthusiast (link in bio).

I’ve had 96 tostadas de jaiba in México and this one in Denver (gently caressed with mantequilla avellanada, & with salsa habanera y ajo caramelizado) is my favorite.
@almalohidenver by @johnnycuriel7, who has made one of the most legit 🇲🇽 empires in the 🇺🇸. We bow down.

In what is today the Mexican Consulate, that’s me in the spot-light, losing my religion. This lousy pic isn’t 👨🏻‍🍳 or 🍷 or 🎶 or algorithm-friendly, but it’s a good representative photo of my 1970s childhood on Broadway on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. Until I was 11, Dad lived above the movie theater he owned, the “Harvard Exit,” Seattle’s first art-house repertory theater.

The guy in back is Jeff Dowd, who “The Big Lebowski” was modeled after. Dad didn’t have custody but our mom was happy for us to go there anytime since it was only 3 blocks away and we had keys. We liked it cause it was kind of a clubhouse for the 70s Seattle freak scene.

It was a precocious kid’s paradise, with a Pong machine, The Joy Of Sex, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers & R. Crumb comics, a Scrabble box full of weed with cherry-flavored Zig Zags & child-friendly joint-rolling contraptions, and our choice of matzo brei or Swedish pancakes for breakfast-as-dinner.

There was a door from his living room to a staircase that led to the theater balcony, so if we timed it right, we could hop down for nude scenes. One window sat directly above a busy street, where, like all good ‘70s kids, we’d yell “honk if you’re horny” and toss water balloons near—never on!—passers by.

Two of his pals here, Steve and Stretch, lived in the shadow of the Saint Spiridon Orthodox Church and I think they were counterfeiters because they didn’t work, had a “workshop” we weren’t allowed to go into, giant aggressive dogs, and lots of bills laying around in weird denominations like 10s and 50s.

🇲🇽 [Riviera Maya hotel alert] A Mayan saying “juntéenili’ u xíitil nikte’e” means, roughly, “la flor sólo brota una vez” and trust me, I couldn’t be more appreciative of rare opportunities like … Chablé Maroma @chablemaroma! You might know their great time-warp @chableyucatan ‘cause everyone has a crush on @luisronzon, and Chable Valle de Guadalupe 🍇 (opening late 2026 hopefully?) promises to be a model for responsible hotelling in a sensitive place 🤞, but Chablé Maroma has the advantage of beach (the best beach in the area, empty, reef-protected, with calm clear water & no sargazo!). The vibe is jungle, mangrove, and beach in one, totally transportive—wellness, not party—with quiet Yucatecan details like chukum, real palapas, local hardwoods, chaya, melipona honey, copal, Mayan cleanses on demand, plus a rooftop shellfish bar 😭 and a phenomenal restaurant Bu’ul @buulrestaurant (the secret of the Riviera Maya=some of Mexico’s best restaurants are tucked away in resorts sprawled between Cancun & Tulum: @teodoromoxche @autortulum @itzametereo @cocinadeautorrivieramaya @ramona_restaurante @kiiskanai & more, most of which can be reserved w/o staying at the hotels). The wasp-fig thing is super cool but irrelevant: In your figs, like chivalrous knights in shining armor, they either never existed or are long gone.

I wrote about it @foodandwine (subsequent photos are the CA fig varieties, and treats made with a variety of @cafigs with my favorite chef @michaelvadino)

Fun fact: Though they’re associated with far-flung locales, almost all fresh figs sold in the U.S. are grown there.

Not-As-Fun Fact: The FDA allows up to 1250 identifiable insect fragments (they can be microscopic, but still) in just 10 grams of ground oregano. LOTS of bugs in your food.
