I haven’t been in the studio for a few weeks as my energies and focus have been in a new job and on the Stop the Game campaign and fundraiser with @irish_visual_artists_for_gaza.
Míle Buíochas ó chroí to all you beautiful beings who hopped onboard to engage with us throughout our campaign and fundraiser, in all your forms and ways. It is such a privilege to be able to spend time on something that connects and that helps us hang onto our humanity and keep hope alive, despite the inconceivable horror that our fellow humans are suffering across the globe. I think there is something so profound in having people in their thousands travel to Garvaghy Road in solidarity with the residents, against sectarianism, whilst there is a football home game being played, not at home and behind closed gates elsewhere. The games were played but there has been a shift and I for one have felt another layer of my being unfolding, whilst witnessing so much unity, generosity and compassion this past few weeks.

I forgot it was @inktober until yesterday when this pen drawing fell out of an old Art Forum magazine when I was doing a clear out. It’s from 2020 and I have no recollection of drawing it!

I have a ferocious digital hangover and am very excited to be hopping off line for some days.

5. This is a documentation from @mosab_abutoha of an area called Bani Suheila area, east of Khan Younis.
A new school for girls in Khan Younis is the focus of our fund raising campaign.

Imagine trying to educate your children in the bombed ruins of your homeland.

The raffle takes place tomorrow at 5pm and beyond that we will be selling @irish_visual_artists_for_gaza ‘s Christmas cards by the wonderful @essiecarrollillustrations to continue raising the much needed funds to get these girls back to education after a three year attack on their education. Scholasticide in real time.

It was so amazing to meet Naomi Klein last night and to see her wearing one of our “sport is political” scarves designed by Bláthnaid Ní Mhúrchú @nimhur

Naomi’s new book with Astra Taylor, ‘End Times Fascism’ is enlightening and terrifying but thankfully somewhat hopeful , a sharp analysis of how the super-rich are no longer just exploiting disasters but provoking and planning for them, and a rallying call for what comes next: not separation and supremacy, but interdependence and belonging.

What I learned from the evening: we need to continue to organise. To build community, to stay faithful to this troubled earth, to resist fiercely and fight for the living world, together. 💪🏽

“YOU”LL NEVER BEAT THE IRISH”

For years it’s been a chant on the terraces. NOW it needs to mean something more.

Right now, families in Gaza are enduring cruelty beyond words. Unbearable loss, hunger and suffering that should never be allowed to happen.

We cannot look away. We are Irish. We know what it means to live under oppression, and to resist it.

So this is a call to the FAI to stand up.
This is a call to our Irish team to stand up.
This is a call to the FAI to STOP THE GAME.

This is a call to YOU to stand up and speak out.

In this video, teachers, nurses, artists, poets, musicians, Bressie, Síle Seoige, Aoife Dunne, Diane Kelly and so many more — they were all brave enough. They spoke up.

Work in progress
Peann luaidhe ar paipéir, 2026

It’s a strange Friday afternoon in my home studio across the road from our beloved Phoenix Park, in the knowledge that it is closed off to us all because of the arrival of a war criminal, a genocidal maniac enabler and all round rotten, evil excuse for a human being.
I am taking solace in listening to @onbeing with Krista Tippet interviewing the brilliant “Micheal Pollan - The Mystery of Consciousness”, episode 1,163 and On Purpose with Jay Shetty “Micheal Pollan : The hidden cost of constant distraction” and they are guiding the direction of my drawing.
My mind is flooded with thoughts and ideas from these conversations around consciousness being outside of us, how social media hacks our attention, our real kinship with nature, plants as sentient beings, the consciousness of creatures, how mysterious everything really is and how perception shapes reality - fascinating insights into meditative practices (drawing for me is one), neuroscience and psycadellics. Pollan’s book “ A World Appears” , a sweeping exploration of consciousness, sounds like a must read.

Work in progress and a new whispy being…
Sometimes a piece needs some breathing time and this is one of those but something has unfolded and the eclipse and my time on the Blascaod Mór have joined the dots for this drawing to emerge further. One of my favourite things about making art is the non linear journey of creating and patience, sweet patience.

The only way I can manage the cascading states of emotions as I navigate through the fast pace of environmental, social and political destruction, is to think and draw a way through. Olivia Laing in her brilliant book “ Funny Weather” refers to being “stuck in a spin cycle of terrified paranoia” amidst the “intense emotional impact of the news”
I have feelings of rage too often at the relentless human and ecological suffering at the hands of out of control vile maniacs, and also have been contemplating light and the intelligence of the natural world a lot, as I always tend to do and am drawn back time and time again to the bright and beautiful mind of Diana Beresford - Kroeger, whose book “ To Speak for the Trees” is a must read.
“We need to understand the natural world as people once did. We need to see all that the Sacred Cathedral of the forest offers us and understand, that amongst those offerings is a way to save the world.
We are all woodland people (I love this and can relate ), like trees we hold a genetic memory of the past, because trees are the parent to the child deep within us. We feel that shared history come alive every time we step into the forest, where the majesty of nature calls to us in a voice beyond our immaginations.[..] Connection to the natural world is there, waiting to be remembered.”
Diana with her brilliant mind and Brehon law knowledge is an absolute wonder and through her research proved that trees possess all the same chemicals we have in our brains. This is incredible to think about and clarifies for me the feeling of connection I have had with nature my whole life. Diana goes on to say that trees have the neural abilities to listen and to think, that they all have the component parts necessary to have a mind or consciousness.
“Forests can think or perhaps even dream”
Now go hug a tree this weekend and take a moment to grieve for all that is being lost to fires and take action in taking down those who continue to disregard life on earth in their deranged pursuit of wealth and status.
