People’s voices deserves to be heard, their choices matter and their lives will be shaped by the systems we build. More importantly, beyond every conversation about technology are real people.

Documenting in photographs The AI for Democracy Forum in Abuja brought together conversations around artificial intelligence, democracy and what the future of the electoral processes in Nigeria could look like ranging from voter education, election administration and cyber security in regards to the growing concerns around misinformation, data protection, algorithm bias and accountability while exploring the possibilities that Artificial Intelligence presents and the risk that comes with it.

In al of these, the important question remains: how does embrace these possibilities AI brings without compromising fairness, transparency and public trust while ensuring that the systems serve people and strengthen democracy rather than undermining it.

These are few frames from the room that serves as a reminder that the future of technology must also be a conversation about the people it serves. taken in Abuja, Nigeria by @nimiadeyemo_

A year ago, I walked into Dataphyte with a camera, a lot of curiosity, excitement and a simple goal: to document stories. One year later, I’ve come to realise that the camera was only the beginning.

This past one year has challenged me to think beyond taking good pictures, to think about why a story matters, what the data is saying, and how visuals can help people understand it. I’ve had the opportunity to document people, projects, events, conversations and everyday moments. I’ve worked around data, research, journalism, governance and public policy, and each experience has pushed me to see visual storytelling differently. I’ve learned that sometimes, the most powerful story isn’t just in the numbers. It’s in the persons behind the number, the community behind the statistics and the everyday moment that gives context to the data.

In all of these, I’ve started to find my own direction: research-driven visual storytelling using photography, film and visual communication to make important stories not just readable, but visible.

I’m still learning. Still experimenting. Still figuring things out.

But I’m proud of how much I’ve grown in this first year.

To the leadership at @dataphytefdn , @jayangbayi and the amazing colleagues who have taught me, trusted me, challenged me, collaborated with me and simply allowed me to try new things, thank you. This is just one year down, I look forward to more stories to tell and more importantly, a better equipped and more capable Nimi.
Here’s to the next chapter. šŸ„‚ taken in Dataphyte by @nimiadeyemo_

ā€œNigeria’s digital future cannot be built by government alone but by concerted efforts.ā€ These were the words that stood out for me during the closing remarks as I found myself documenting a room where @nitdanigeria and @dataphytefdn brought together government, civil society, the private sector, academia, development partners and the tech community came together to think about what a more inclusive and responsible digital future for Nigeria could look like.

Beyond the presentations and policy discussions, I was looking for the exchanges, expressions, gestures and quiet moments that make up the story of a room like this.

Sometimes, documenting important work is not just about recording what happened. It is about preserving the people, energy of the room and moments behind the work, so that the story can still be seen long after the meeting is over. taken in Abuja, Nigeria by @nimiadeyemo_

This isn’t something you see every day at work, which is the more reason it caught my attention. In between the meetings, deadlines, data works and everything else that comes with work, there are also moments like this, people being themselves, having fun and simply enjoying the moment.

I think this is one of the beautiful parts of documenting people. Sometimes, it’s not the big moments that tell you the most about a place, but these little, unexpected ones.

At Dataphyte, my role gives me the chance to see and preserve some of those moments. Not just the work we do, but the people behind it and the different ways we connect with one another.

I’m glad I had my camera with me for this onešŸ“· taken in Dataphyte by @nimiadeyemo_

ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CLP-26).

I had the opportunity to document the gathering of people working at the intersection of telecommunications, technology and Africa’s digital future. Understanding my role as a visual storyteller, I’m always fascinated by what happens beyond the obvious. The gestures, interactions, silhouettes, scale and little moments that give an event its character. I observed, anticipated and told the story through photographs.
From the scale of the conference to the quieter conversations happening away from the stage, these are a few frames from the moments that stayed with me.

Over the past weekend, I spent the day documenting the team behind @dataphyteng ’s Election Situation Room as we worked to make sense of the 2026 Osun State governorship election in real time. From monitoring reports and fact-checking information to tracking polling-unit results and turning observations from the field into timely election insights, these are some of the people and moments behind the work.
Beyond the data and technology, I think this kind of work is an important step in strengthening our democracy. Making credible information accessible, holding processes accountable, and helping citizens better understand elections are all part of building a more informed democratic future. For me, it was meaningful documenting the people on this project which I believe is an important step in the right direction.

I was at Unilag earlier this week, documenting a room full of people asking important questions about where Nigeria is headed in an age of AI, much more than prompting ChatGPT.

As someone behind the camera, it was interesting to witness conversations that weren’t just about technology, but about people, language, culture, and how we ensure no one is left behind as things evolve.

One thought I couldn’t shake afterwards was this: if our local languages aren’t represented in the digital spaces we’re building today, what happens to them tomorrow?

Grateful to have documented these session convened by MAcArhur Foundation in partnership with @dataphytefdn and NIThub and the people working to make Nigeria’s AI future more inclusive, relevant, and reflective of the communities it serves. taken in University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba Nigeria by @nimiadeyemo_
