There’s something quietly thrilling about standing at the edge of effort, knowing that the road ahead will demand discipline, restraint, and sacrifice, and walking toward it anyway. Not because it’s glamorous, but because it’s necessary.

The year is still young, and there is work waiting.

Still, I’m fascinated by it.

I walked into the office today with mixed feelings.
Gratitude for the break.
A quiet readiness to return.
And the familiar weight of responsibility settling back in.

Resumption isn’t dramatic for me as it is for some people; it’s reflective. It’s that moment when you pause at the gate, take a breath, and remind yourself why you do the work in the first place.

New year. One step at a time.

Let's collaborate more this year.

Two weeks ago, work slowed down, but not in the same way for everyone.

For some people, it really was a break. No meetings. No deadlines. Just rest, family, sleep, and a chance to breathe. For others, it was still work, just quieter. Working from home, replying to messages in between errands, taking calls while pretending it was still a holiday.

Different experiences, same reality. Work never fully disappears.

Today, Monday, January 5, 2026, everything comes back properly. The alarms. The traffic. The unread emails that piled up quietly. The meetings that start with “Happy New Year” and quickly move on.

And honestly? Most of us are returning with mixed feelings.

Some are refreshed. Some are tired in a different way. Some are anxious. Some are ready. Many are still catching their breath. The break didn’t fix everything, but it helped us pause long enough to notice what we’ve been carrying.

So resumption isn’t about suddenly being “on” again. It’s about easing back into routine. Figuring things out as we go. Remembering that behind the work are people, still human, still adjusting, still trying.

Happy resumption.
Let’s begin again.

We were talking about the festive period, nothing heavy at first. Just how the year had gone, how work had been busy, how everyone was looking forward to a few days of rest. Then he went quiet for a moment, as though choosing his words carefully.

He said this would be the first time he’d be going home knowing he wouldn’t see the one person he always looked forward to meeting. Not because of distance. Not because of misunderstanding. But because death had decided otherwise.

He said he had been fine most days. Laughter with colleagues helped. Work helped. Staying occupied helped. But now, with the journey home approaching, the truth had found him. The house would still stand. The road would still lead there. People would still gather. Yet the one presence that made everything familiar would be missing.

As he spoke, I listened. I nodded. I let him talk. But somewhere between his words, I felt my own restraint slipping. Because I, too, had been avoiding the thought. Pretending it would hurt less if I didn’t give it space. And yet, at every reminder, I found myself wishing plainly, helplessly, that he was still here with us, alive and healthy, still occupying his place in the world as he always had.

I realized then that grief does this thing, it disguises itself as strength until it meets memory. And memory is relentless.

So I told him what I have come to understand. That grief is not always loud. Sometimes it waits for seasons like this, festive periods, familiar journeys, old routines, to remind us of who is no longer reachable. I told him that missing someone deeply only confirms that they mattered deeply. That a life well-lived doesn’t end with absence; it continues in the people shaped by it.

I reminded him to be gentle with himself. To allow the tears if they come. To honor the memories without guilt. And to remember that those who stood firm, who carried strength quietly, are still with us, still anchoring us, still reminding us that love does not collapse simply because someone is gone.

We ended the conversation without resolving the pain. But we left with something better, understanding. And sometimes, that is enough to help us keep walking.

Even when uncertainty surrounds us and time feels scarce, there’s fulfilment in the work done, lessons learned, and the growth that quietly unfolds... Cheers

A little while ago, I found myself scrolling through the photos sent from our event yesterday, and one image pulled me in instantly. It was a candid shot of me laughing, relaxed, and completely in the moment. I couldn’t recall what caused the laughter, but the softness on my face felt undeniably genuine. It reminded me of something I often overlook, that who I am becoming is shaping itself quietly, in the simple, unremarkable moments I rarely pay attention to.

We tend to search for signs of growth in the big things, achievements, milestones, breakthroughs. Yet the truth is, so much of our transformation happens in moments like this. Moments when we feel safe enough to drop our guard. Moments when we are surrounded by people who give us room to breathe, to loosen up, to let joy come naturally. Moments when we are simply ourselves without trying to be anything more.

This picture stirred gratitude in me. Gratitude for the journey that has brought me this far, for the people who stand beside me and make the load lighter, and for the unexpected joys that weave themselves quietly into my days. I am still evolving, still learning, still growing into myself. And there’s something deeply beautiful about recognizing that even when I’m not consciously measuring my progress, life is gently shaping me into someone stronger, gentler, and more whole.

The real joy of becoming, for me, lies in knowing that I am no longer who I once was. Every sincere laugh, every genuine connection, every small but meaningful step forward contributes to the story of the person I’m gradually becoming.

I’m learning to value these small moments, to pause long enough to see them clearly, to appreciate my own efforts, and to acknowledge how far I’ve come. Because the truth is, I am becoming someone I am beginning to recognize with pride, someone more grounded, more intentional, more aware of who they are and who they’re becoming.

Yesterday, I spent the entire day in deep conversations with the ten fellows we commissioned for our biodiversity reporting fellowship.

Each fellow walked us through their field experience, what they saw, who they spoke with, what surprised them, and the tough choices they had to make to bring their stories to life. We talked about the challenges of accessing remote communities, verifying environmental claims, interpreting scientific data, and translating complex ecological issues into stories people can understand and act on.

Their reflections were powerful.
Their work is evidence that biodiversity reporting is not just about documenting nature, it’s about connecting ecosystems to human lives, livelihoods, justice, governance, and climate realities.

These conversations are now helping us validate our process for producing strong, data-driven biodiversity investigations, from story conception to fieldwork, analysis, verification, and final reporting. Their experiences will form real-world case studies in the toolkit we're developing.

This toolkit is being designed as a practical guide for journalists working in challenging environments, helping them understand not just what to report, but how to report biodiversity issues with depth, accuracy, and accountability.

And when it’s ready, the document will be made available to journalists, editors, and newsrooms looking to build or strengthen a biodiversity reporting beat.
