You never know who will walk into your life and quietly change its direction.

Some friendships arrive unexpectedly, make space for you, believe in what you’re doing, and somehow give you more room to become yourself.

The first time I saw @riaisawake perform was in Vancouver in 2019. I didn’t know who she was. I just remember being completely taken by her energy, her music, her honesty, and the feeling that I was watching someone really special.

And somehow, years later, I’ve had the privilege of photographing her along the way. These are from her visit to Montréal in July, when we got to make some things together.

There’s something pretty extraordinary about the full-circle moments in life. To think that the person I was watching from somewhere in the crowd all those years ago would one day become someone I’d have the privilege of working alongside feels a little surreal.

Mostly, I’m just grateful. Grateful for staying curious, for following the things that move us, and for all the unexpected ways a life can unfold. ✨

How do you stay centered when everything feels like it’s falling apart?

Maybe you don’t.

Maybe you carve time.
You make space.

Maybe it’s one breath
Right there, on your knees, in the overwhelm and wild grief.

You soften around what you cannot control.
You show up for what is here.
You breathe.
You listen.
You let yourself be changed by what is happening.

And maybe, somewhere in all of that, you remember that nothing matters.

And everything is sacred.

The small things.
The ordinary things.
The things you thought would last.
The things that didn’t.

The body.
The breath.
This moment.
This life, somehow still unfolding.

Maybe staying centered isn’t about holding yourself together.

Maybe it’s about softening enough to feel where you are.

You are not alone.

No escape.
Sit with yourself.
The noise eventually fades away. The discomfort sits with you. Surrounds you.
There is no escape darling.
Can you look at yourself?

I keep polishing the mirror or my heart. I keep letting go of stories. I keep softening. I’m tired. I’m Grateful. I am still here.

My mortality and my dreams and I, sitting together.

I have no idea what I’m doing, all I can do is show up with this heart, open and raw. All I can do is stay curious.
