I saw a post that said, “Imagine how much propaganda it took for women to believe their bodies exist to be looked at rather than lived in.”

And my immediate thought was: “not that much”

Because propaganda sounds loud, big, obvious.

But this one is quiet, almost a natural way of living.

It arrived so early we can’t remember a version of ourselves before it.

We learn to view our bodies from the outside in. To monitor ourselves. To evaluate ourselves. To become both the person having the experience and the person watching it happen.

The woman drinking the coffee and the woman wondering how she looks drinking the coffee.

The woman feeling grief and the woman watching herself cry.

The woman entering a room and the woman evaluating how she is being perceived in it.

We internalize the gaze so deeply that eventually no one else even needs to be there.

We critique ourselves entirely alone.

I’ve spent a lot of my forties trying to untangle that. Trying to return to myself.

I want to walk into a room thinking less about how I look in the space and more about what I bring to it.

I want to be more interested in how a moment feels, and less time surveying it.

I want to feel it all from the inside out. To experience my life truly being present instead of constantly imagining or as a third person observing, critiquing.

I don’t take perfect photos and I’ll never will. One of my assets is to be who I am in every single aspect of my life. Real, not perfect. No shame. No apologize.

There’s people who take it as weird, too much, they get overwhelm, but you know, if you’re not absolutely yourself, then who will you become? The copy? Somebody else’s idea? What society tells you to be?

Following the rules takes away your greatness.

Since the first time I’ve held a camera, it was just natural. No thinking. No perfect idea. Just feeling. The sweet spot. My mind quiet and my heart explodes. I get excited of what I’m seeing.

I feel the strength and sensuality of the woman I’m seeing through my lens. I feel reflected. Like a mirror. I’m her and she is me.
