I saw a post that said, “Imagine how much propaganda it took for women to believe their bodies exist to be looked at rather than lived in.”

And my immediate thought was: “not that much”

Because propaganda sounds loud, big, obvious.

But this one is quiet, almost a natural way of living.

It arrived so early we can’t remember a version of ourselves before it.

We learn to view our bodies from the outside in. To monitor ourselves. To evaluate ourselves. To become both the person having the experience and the person watching it happen.

The woman drinking the coffee and the woman wondering how she looks drinking the coffee.

The woman feeling grief and the woman watching herself cry.

The woman entering a room and the woman evaluating how she is being perceived in it.

We internalize the gaze so deeply that eventually no one else even needs to be there.

We critique ourselves entirely alone.

I’ve spent a lot of my forties trying to untangle that. Trying to return to myself.

I want to walk into a room thinking less about how I look in the space and more about what I bring to it.

I want to be more interested in how a moment feels, and less time surveying it.

I want to feel it all from the inside out. To experience my life truly being present instead of constantly imagining or as a third person observing, critiquing.

I don’t take perfect photos and I’ll never will. One of my assets is to be who I am in every single aspect of my life. Real, not perfect. No shame. No apologize.

There’s people who take it as weird, too much, they get overwhelm, but you know, if you’re not absolutely yourself, then who will you become? The copy? Somebody else’s idea? What society tells you to be?

Following the rules takes away your greatness.

This space for whatever reason has always been a journal of sorts. A place to dump whatever thoughts are floating around in my head. A timestamp of a moment. Maybe one I will come back to again or maybe just a way to release it and let it breathe.

After a conversation this morning with two really beautiful people, I was reminded of how long I played life safe.

I’ve hidden in the shadows since I was a kid. It always felt safer to stand back, stay on the sidelines, not be the center of attention. If I stayed observant, I could read the room better. I could navigate. I could stay three steps ahead.

Those were skills I developed really young to protect myself. To manage the emotions around me. To avoid making waves. To not be too much, too needy, too emotional, too difficult.

So I spent a lot of my life trying to be that. Easy. Self-aware. Accommodating.

But after my divorce, I realized that isn’t really living. That’s not who I am. And it isn’t who I want to be anymore. The people who really love you want all of you, and the people who can’t handle it, it’s ok to let them go.

take up space.
have needs.
be seen fully.

But honestly, at 44 years old, breaking 42-year-old survival patterns is really effing hard.

I’m grateful for the people who have crossed my path and gently reminded me that I’m allowed to be more expansive. The people who have seen me, loved me, encouraged me, even in the middle of my mess.

There’s something really healing about being loved where you are while still being encouraged to grow.
