POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
“Soulever” by Jonathan Fenton (B.Arch, third year), created for the Spring 2026 ARCH 396 Studo VI, led by Prof. Cleveland Harp

A gallery for the French and modern political revolutions, Soulever, meaning “to lift” in French, reforms French architectural tradition to serve the modern museum goer of Paris. The building takes the historical materials and order of haussmannian buildings and lifts/pulls its components into the air. This allows modern glazing and circulation spaces to be placed between spatial blocks, lightening and modernizing a historical typology for museum use. A system of mass timber is exposed and used to control light in spaces, adding modern structural beauty. Mirroring the historical stories of revolution housed inside, soulever is a translation of revolution into architectural form, reinventing how an existing structure can be rewritten while maintaining identity. by @njit_hillier

Introducing the HCAD Book Rec Series, an initiative for the HCAD community to share impactful architecture and design book recommendations.

Kennedy Jones, HCAD’s Architecture, Art and Design Librarian, offers the first book recommendation in this series, “Project Japan: Metabolism Talks...” by Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Kennedy shares “It’s about the Japanese architecture movement called Metabolism. It’s a beautifully designed book, packed with graphics, plans, and photos, all about a very forward thinking group of mid-century architects. The interviews with the architects and designers are full of interesting anecdotes, one quote that really caught my attention comes from Kenji Ekuan:

“Actually, when I stood in the ruins of Hiroshima shortly after the atomic bombing, I was suddenly overcome by this sense of personal mission. This is a true story. I lost some of my own family to the bomb...There, in a world where there was nothing left at all, I felt the call of all things man-made...I vowed to pursue the kind of change that fit the needs of postwar Japan through industrial design.” Koolhaas, Rem, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist 2011, 481.” by @njit_hillier

Throwing it back to the early years of the New Jersey School of Architecture at NJIT. The school was formally established in 1973, building on a long history of architectural education at NJIT that dates back to the late 19th century. From early architectural drawing courses to the founding of the New Jersey School of Architecture, the college has continued to evolve alongside the field itself.

This archival image offers a glimpse into the enduring culture of the school: students gathered together, work on the walls, and a wide range of approaches to the practice of architecture.

As we preserve HCAD’s history, we also recognize that its story is still being written. What memories, projects, people, and moments have shaped your experience at HCAD?

“The Sacrifice Zone” by Brianna Kailas (B.Arch, third year), created for the Summer 2026 ARCH 463 Options Studio I: Radical Spatiality, led by Prof. Matei Dense, examines what happens when pollution is treated not as a temporary condition to be removed but as a reality that communities must learn to live with it.

Along the Passaic River, decades of industrial activity, including chemical production, paint manufacturing, waste oil facilities, and metal finishing, have left a lasting environmental legacy. The river has since been designated as a Superfund site, raising questions about how communities and ecosystems can exist within landscapes shaped by contamination.

Rather than proposing another conventional building as a solution, Brianna’s project questions the assumption that architecture must respond through new construction. What happens when architecture operates through adaptation rather than expansion? How can design acknowledge, reveal, and negotiate existing conditions rather than attempting to erase them?

The project considers pollution as a condition that architecture must engage with, challenging traditional ideas of the building as a solution and exploring architecture through systems, adaptation, landscape, and relationships.

Architecture is not an isolated object. It is a framework that enables standards to be challenged.

On September 21, the student-led initiative in-between hosted designer and design experimentalist Patrick Dawson for the first event in its guest series. Organized by HCAD students, in-between creates space for cross-disciplinary dialogue, connecting architectural thinking with adjacent creative fields.

Dawson shared his work, process, and experiences navigating life beyond architecture school, offering students an honest look at how an architectural background can lead to experimental design, unconventional practices, and creative paths beyond traditional practice.

Thank you to Patrick for joining us and to everyone who came out to participate in the conversation.

“The Weeds” by Anna Dynda (B.Arch 4th year), led by Associate Professor Gernot Riether for ARCH 463 Options Studio I during the Summer Study Abroad. The Weeds reimagines the street as a vibrant public space that prioritizes people over vehicles, reclaiming it as a place for community, recreation, and connection. The proposal transforms the streetscape through the integration of green and blue infrastructure, creating a resilient urban environment that helps mitigate rising temperatures and the impacts of climate change. Landscaped mounds sculpt the ground plane, forming a series of adaptable pockets of space that accommodate a variety of public programs, from informal gathering areas and play spaces to seating and intimate pathways. By combining ecological performance with flexible public use, The Weeds creates a streetscape that is both environmentally responsive and socially engaging, fostering a stronger relationship between people, nature, and the city. by @njit_hillier
