Where’s your happy place these days?

Ours is at BOOTH, PLEASE every Sunday, where we follow tangents that loosely connect topics we’re passionate about – like "place" – with the themes we explore in each issue.

But for the last few Sundays, amid the horrific acts of gun violence seizing our country, Lune and I took shelter in our own personal booths, holding those we love a little tighter, and cherishing life’s happy places a little longer.

Like the joyful arrival of Lune’s baby daughter (we’re head over heels in love with this little Denster!). Like graduation celebrations of all kinds (Oh, the Places - with strange and complicated connections to New Jersey - You’ll Go!). And yes, even a few research trips abroad (big takeaway: no one casts its spell on the world quite like New Jersey, and Dense is here for it).

Given the chaotic times we’re in, it’s a strange twist of fate that this week’s BOOTH, PLEASE is dropping all the way from Scotland, a country whose zest for autonomy from current British rule is matched, ironically, by its colonization of Lenape lands over 300 years ago. A place that’s given us “East Jersey” pre-colonial settlements like Perth Amboy, Woodbridge, and Elizabeth, and some of the most vibrant, racially diverse populations in the state. It’s not lost on us how the concept of “place” can be both pioneering and free from accountability in one spastic swoop. But listen closely, and you’ll also hear what opportunities there are to make things right with those who’ve been absent yet central to the “place” narrative.

Friends, things are dense. Babies are being born, children are graduating, innocent lives are being stolen and the American dream is rising up – and down, and up again – from the marshes of New Jersey. If you need help queuing in the awkward laughter like we do, then plug in your earbuds and press play on our conversation with Gabrielle Esperdy – design historian, indie film buff, phragmites fiend, and author of Issue 1 essay “The City of New Jersey.”

With a f*ck ton of peace and joy,
Lune & Petia
Dense Cofounders & Editors

P.S. We’re so happy to be back!
