@julianjamesa and my aim for the Ben Ohau trip was to camp up in a spot where we had access to skiing of different styles and aspects. We were looking for shady powder and afternoon corn. The @gme_au radios played a key role - letting us warn each other of Aotearoa’s often lurking ice chunks, sun crust, and sharks so we could make the most of the skiing.

Thanks @joeleep , @gme_au , @julianjamesa and @adielawrence for rallying to camp on short notice! 🙏 by @njpascoe

Winter camping is an acquired taste, the right gear lets you enjoy the views, manage the cold, and get some skiing in. This trip was two days in the Ben Ohau range with @gme_au , @julianjamesa , @joeleep and @adielawrence . Predictably no service to be found up there and a slog away from the road, so along with plenty of warm clothes the GME PLB was an essential backup for emergency comms without weighing us down.

November 2025 - @kitpascoe , Quintin, and myself tried to seize one of the few weather windows spring provided last year. We had grand, probably over optimistic per usual, plans of a loop through the Malte Brun range. Glacial recession and climate change, made worse by a recent severe rainfall event, turned us away. Instead we got an awesome couple of days journeying back in time skiing from Ball Hut, exploring the slopes where a generation of kiwi skiers learnt the craft and the early national skiing championships were held.

The trip piqued my interest, and with a couple of months of research it became a story that delves into the place Ball Hut played in the development of skiing and climbing in Aotearoa.

Huge thanks to Patagonia Aotearoa for the support and @daisymaddinson for the patience and excellent editing, the story is much stronger for your efforts and hopefully so is my future writing skill. 🙏

Thanks also to Dave Fearnley and Roy Smith for the personal anecdotes, it’s cool we live somewhere that we can still call around for beta and people are willing to pick up the phone to yarn and help! 🙌

Photos are all by brother @kitpascoe - he definitely got the artistic talent and it was great to work with him on seeing this to life. 📸

Long caption - if you made it this far go read the story on the Patagonia NZ website or via the link in my bio! by @njpascoe

Boutique Central Otago ski touring. It’s just like boutique kayaking, lots of walking and annoying rocks. However we had stunner views, an awesome toasty hut courtesy of our firewood haul, lots of cheese and crackers, and epic country to explore. We did also get some good turns. Would go again. Cheers @jaaaaweb @libbyclifton and Connor for a fun Matariki weekend away. 🌌 by @njpascoe

Rakiura May 28th - June 3rd. Phone snaps from an incredible week circumnavigating Stewart Island with my great mate @murraycharles .

Paddling in the exposed Southern Ocean is highly weather dependent so we had some anxious days checking the wind and swell forecasts leading up to the trip. Some flexibility and a lot of luck saw us paddle out of Oban into a gale headwind, but it then eased back for two lovely big days getting dehydrated and pushing hard down the West Coast and through the crux of the trip.
The headwind came back for a slog into Port Pegasus, then we had the best paddling of the trip on glassy waters with a following current up the East Coast to Big Kuri. Two final days at a slower pace allowed some fishing and beer and chips with the locals.
Rakiura is a special place and I’ll be back for many more trips to explore the island and hang out with the seabirds and sea lions.

Lots of thanks to: 🙏
Chaz for for the trust and epic attitude

Keith Murray and @jane.m.mitchell for the advice and gear lends
@blakeyhornblow , @adventurous_grace_ and Keith for the trip inspiration

Few scenes from True West adventure race before the emergency phone got cold and wet and went flat. Surprisingly we also got wet and cold in the roaring southerly headwind and had to have a wee 3am nap. Some tough moments for sure, but overall a blast on an incredible course with awesome paddling, and a pleasure to hang out with three of the most cheerful blokes I know @jimmy.mackay @blakeyhornblow @q_hornblow 🙏

Mid Nov 2025: a few images from a spur of the moment trip up to French Ridge and the Bonar Glacier. Not pictured are prime spring corn skiing and overly friendly kea, but also pollen clouds sparkling over the valley leading to some horrific hayfever and a lunchtime nap on the glacier. by @njpascoe
