My Return. October 1–10.
@rjmkoeln

r e t u r n .. IS INTENSE! So many encounters, conversations, unexpected visits, different communities crossing paths.

Moments of joy, melancholy, and sometimes sadness.

A full house on our free Thursday!
Why can’t museums always be like this?
A lecture performance by Omar Kasmani @the_scene_maker a weekly 60 minutes seminar organised by Uni Cologne : @sensingloss

Weaving in WERKSTATT return with my beloved conservator (and my hero of the @rjmkoeln ) Kristina Hopp and a painting session about home and memory with @ellenaalbum .

Our Homefood Canteen called BARAZA curated by @inhaus_ev and @creatingcommunitycologne and @kojothecook. Every day warm soup and hibiscus tee in the exhibition space!

A reading in Farsi with @rostamitahmineh, @talya_lubinsky speaking about her artwork “Floating bodies” during my Walk & Talk, and a surprise visit from historian Ciraj Rassool @cirajrassool from Cape Town.

Our series of Strikes for Joy started this week with @interfemme ! Joy as resistance and solidarity, especially in difficult times.

This Thursday Another Sensing Loss session with @pfeifer_simone on Hanau and remembrance followed by a Sorbian wedding soup cooked by @kaschneider_1 combined with and Sorbian futuristic films and laughter.

Saturday into the museum’s storage rooms with @njeeri_njata_ and Kikuyu women from Kenya and the diaspora. Who gets access to collections? Who tells their stories?

And music! Nostalgie des Südens with @masurkaconcerts.

This is my r e t u r n . Exile, loss, post-memory, colonial collections, belonging and ReMatriation. But also eating, weaving, listening to music, laughing, being simply together.

And r e t u r n continues! Next week, @hn_lyonga with There is a Table in this House, and Afrotreff 4.0 @afrotreff, a safe space for Black communities with Francis Oguma in r e t u r n.

These are the museum moments I believe in.

And after all these encounters with loss, memory and belonging, my eldest son Josh arrived from Paris. Mother love. ❤️

 r e t u r n
between past and future, another place emerges

Until December 6, 2026

STRIKE FOR JOY!

FREUDESTREIK!
STRIKE FOR JOY!
GRÈVE POUR LA JOIE !
¡HUELGA POR LA ALEGRÍA!

A collective Strike initiated by InterFemme e.V.*

3.10.2026 l 16:00
7.11.2026 l 16:00
3.12.2026 l 19:00
6.12.2026 l 16:00

The crises are real. We strike anyway!

« War, the climate crisis, rising rents, constant stress, bad news by the minute. We read it, we feel it, and sometimes we no longer know what to do with the fear, the anger and the exhaustion.

That is exactly what STRIKE FOR JOY is about.

In our performance, we strike against what these crises do to us: against exhaustion, against powerlessness, against the constant pressure to keep functioning, and against the quiet rules that tell us what a “good life” is supposed to look like.

And we strike for something: for joy. Not as an escape and not as denial, but as a force. Those who live only in fear can no longer change anything. Those who share joy together can keep going longer. Or, as we put it:

We don’t rejoice because everything is alright.
We rejoice so that we don’t give up.

You don’t need to know how to do anything, and you don’t need to achieve anything. You are welcome simply to be there, to watch, to join in, or just to listen.

Everything is allowed, including being tired.

STRIKE FOR JOY is part of the exhibition return at the @rjmkoeln

Bring your friends. And your exhaustion. It can come too.

Come along and strike for joy with us! »

InterFemme* uses its cultural projects to promote empowerment, combat discrimination against FLINTA*, and advance anti-racist work. The association is an inclusive, transcultural, emancipatory and supportive network for artists and cultural practitioners with and without experiences of racism in Cologne and North Rhine-Westphalia. Through our projects, we bring more perspectives into the arts and cultural scene so that it can become a more realistic reflection of society.

NEWS | MBAYE DIOP | RAUTENSTRAUCH-JOEST-MUSEUM

Mbaye Diop’s (@ndomboal) animated movie “Espace Trépasse” (2021) is part of the collective exhibition “r e t u r n. between past and future emerges another present’”, curated by Nanette Snoep (@njsnoep) at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum (@rjmkoeln), in Cologne.

r e t u r n explores questions of longing, belonging and fragmented memory after experiences of loss, displacement and dislocation. Bringing together international artists, the exhibition traces what violence, colonialism and war leave behind: gaps in archives, suppressed histories and memories that continue to live in bodies, landscapes and communities. But r e t u r n does not only ask what has been lost. The works imagine new connections – to people, places and histories, to the environment and to possible futures. Memory and imagination open up new possibilities.

—

» Uta M. 🌱SINCRÉTICAS – Performance by Vanessa Ramos-Velasquez

📅 Thursday, 24 September 2026
🕡 6:30–9 pm
📍 Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum

Vanessa Ramos-Velasquez’s related installations and performative activation in r e t u r n honor her African ancestry.

Her enslaved great-grandmother, Amélia, born in Brazil, transmits a legacy of syncretic spirituality as a form of resistance.

Sincréticas traverses the ocean to evoke the womb of Mother Africa across African diasporas.

The Orixá Iansã, a female deity of atmospheric elements, is syncretized in the sword plants that open up the entryway leading to the exhibition hall.

On a mound of sea salt, Iansã rests her body as the plants also known as Dracaena (Sansevieria) trifasciata ‘Laurentii’ work tirelessly to cleanse the air—an actual benefit of the species.

Inside the exhibition space, the artist creates a personal, silent ritual within a mound of sea salt in memory of those taken by the Atlantic during the Middle Passage slave trade, for whom fresh air was scarce aboard the overcrowded ships.

One installation site echoes the other through sensory emanations and gestures of healing.

🎙️Following the performance, Vanessa Ramos-Velasquez will be in conversation with Nanette Snoep, Artistic Director of the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum.

SINCRÉTICAS is part of the exhibition r e t u r n – between past and future, another place emerges.
