We're thrilled to announce our acquisition of a $3.74 million portfolio of properties spanning nearly the entire 1900 block of E. Stella St!

Strategically located between Conwell Middle and Willard Elementary, Ruth Street Garden, the Kensington Engagement Center, and other NKCDC properties coming online soon, these properties will form a coordinated ecosystem of support, economic activity and mobility, and safety.

This acquisition preserves 24 units of naturally occurring affordable housing renting at 40-60% AMI and a 30,000 sq ft warehouse that will bring new partners to create a bubble of economic activity, workforce development, educational opportunities, and safety that supports community healing and transformation.

Representing the next stage of NKCDC's real estate work and a model for intentional, anti-displacement development, we are stabilizing a pocket of Kensington and layering it with investments and resources residents have identified as their priorities for years through the Co-Creating Kensington process.

As part of this project, we will work with partners to deepen affordability through environmental and sustainability improvements to homes. Residents will also have increased access to our wrap-around services, including urban agriculture, nutrition and food access, housing counseling, financial coaching, and violence intervention. Together, these investments will create additional pathways to economic opportunity and increase food and environmental justice by strengthening household stability and improving health and safety.

This project is part of our larger strategy to preserve, build, and stabilize housing in a neighborhood facing intersecting crises. The Stella St. portfolio and layered services will be a catalyst for a collaborative, hyper-local anti-poverty strategy, created in response to the community's self-determined priorities, that links housing stability to workforce development, education, health, food access, and urban agriculture into one comprehensive effort.

In the coming months, we'll seek partners to transform the warehouse and bring coordinated services to residents. Read more in our bio! by @nkcdc

In an editorial for the Philly Inquirer today, we pose the question: what to the oppressed is the semi-quincentennial?

In 1852, Frederick Douglass was invited to deliver a speech commemorating the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In response, he asked a question and delivered remarks that still resonate today: What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?

The answer written in commentary form hasn’t lost its power or relevance in Philadelphia in 2026: “What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.”

Forty years later, the nation marked another milestone with the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas. Yet this celebration too did not represent all Americans. While the World’s Fair is often remembered for its grand architecture and technological achievements, it also reinforced racial hierarchies and excluded Black Americans from full participation and recognition.

Folks from across the city are coming together to draw inspiration from those who challenged that exclusion, disrupted the status quo, and advanced real solutions to persistent systemic inequities for A People’s Exposition, a citywide exhibit and engagement series at the Kensington Engagement Center.

Swipe or head to the link in our bio to read the full editorial. Learn more about A People’s Exposition at nkcdc.org/a-peoples-exposition. Join us and partners at our opening celebration on May 20th from 5:30PM-7:30PM! by @nkcdc

Over the last few months, NKCDC and partners, including Rewilding Philadelphia, artist and educator Pedro Ospina (@theopenkitchensculpturegarden), @acadnatsci, @muralartsphiladelphia, and Natural Urban Forests (@naturalurbanforests), have been engaging Kensington residents in imagining and designing a new pocket forest that will be planted at the Jasper Street Greenspace on October 24th. We want you to join us!

The Jasper Street Greenspace is a former industrial site turned greenspace located along the Conrail tracks. Like many post-industrial sites, making any plans for the space requires thoughtful planning, partnerships with expertise, and resident input to safely bring the space back for human use and to remediate and heal the land. As part of this process, we've been working with environmental partners to test the soil onsite to better understand the site's history and soil conditions. Any designs and implemented plans will consider the site's industrial history for the safety of plants and people.

Planting a Pocket Forest on the site will provide an opportunity for afforestation. Using the Miyawaki method for rapid native forest creation, ten years after the planting, the site will mature into a cool, shady, dense, and biodiverse public space teeming with life, enhancing an already existing native plant haven occupying part of the space!

Are you interested in caring for plants and a community greenspace? There are still opportunities to get involved with restoring and healing the Jasper Street Greenspace in Kensington:

- On October 21st, we’ll be hosting a community volunteer day! Help us rake and shovel the site to prep it for planting day!

- On October 23rd, there will be an opportunity for kids to volunteer at the space as we finalize the prep for planting day!

- Join us for a planting day on October 24th!

Come help us plant 1,500+ native trees! Join us for food, live drumming, art, and native plant education!

This August and September, we’ve worked with more than a dozen partners to facilitate five workshops about the current state and future of housing in Philadelphia as part of A People’s Exposition. Together, we’ve explored the challenges of the existing systems, how housing intersects with other issues, and imagined the ways we can address these challenges and envision a just future.

- We took a field trip to @therailpark and learned how they’re transforming defunct infrastructure into a vibrant community space while also balancing the needs for affordability!
- Sterling Johnson from the Phila. Community Land Trust, NKCDC, and @rhlspa facilitated a session about PHFA’s Qualified Allocation Plan and why it’s relevant to individuals and organizations, and helped connect participants to PHFA’s call for public comment, allowing folks to participate in processes that will help shape affordable housing priorities for PA.
- @myneighborhoodproject, @wcrp, @phillylandstewardsunion, @WeConservePA, and NKCDC partnered to explore challenges and possible solutions to preserving community-centered land and affordable housing.
- @peopleshousinglab hosted their launch party! The panel explored writing as a powerful tool for building power and creating change, and we played a competitive game of housing quizzi after!
- @phillyboricuas organized another popular education event with the @defiendeacaborojo, @peoplestech_ , @nodatacentersinphilly, and @sustain_sj about harmful development in Puerto Rico, Philadelphia, and New Jersey, and how we can build solidarity across communities.
- We wrapped up our housing workshops with the Good Works Coalition, evaluating the effectiveness of Philadelphia’s current response system to extreme heat/extreme cold and supporting unsheltered residents. We heard directly from librarians and advocates about the challenges, and imagined what a better system could look like.

Thanks to our partners for organizing a series of informative and action-oriented events! These workshops are helping us deepen our knowledge and strengthen our collective understanding and ability to act. Want to learn more? Head to nkcdc.org/a-peoples-exposition by @nkcdc

NKCDC's Food Systems programming works to advance food access and health equity through hands-on nutrition education and cooking classes, food tastings, meal kits, garden education, or families and people of all ages.

This summer, we’ve been connecting with youth by partnering with other organizations in Kensington and throughout the city to provide youth programming, including with @kleankenzophilly at their weekly guided gardening where teens learned about growing food and sustainable gardening practices, through a summer camp with @cadekids at Tusculum Gateway Garden, programming with @byfaithhealthandhealing at the Jasper Street Greenspace, and our regular monthly youth cooking classes at the Kensington and McPherson Libraries!

By increasing access to gardens, food, and nutritional education for youth, we’re helping build healthy eating and cooking habits at a young age. Youth programming in NKCDC and partner greenspaces and kitchens allows young people to plug into the food loop at every level, from the planting and harvesting of produce to the preparation of nutritious meals! They also provide a safe place for young people to socialize, get connected to local greenspaces, and learn valuable life skills!

We're grateful to our partners and young people who came out for the opportunity to provide nutritional education and programming to people of all ages in a trusted and accessible community setting.

Yesterday we had the honor of participating in a youth poetry workshop & poetry slam!

More than 40 teens showed up to Mercy Career & Technical HS to write and share about what’s on their mind.

Eighteen courageous teens participated in the slam.

Check out our stories for clips of the poets!

If you are a teen looking for something to do, we’ve got two more special events taking place we’d love to see you at.

Friday, September 25th, we’re watching and discussing the documentary 🎥 We Could be King about the merger of Germantown High School and MLK HS. Coach Dunn from the film will be in attendance. We’ll look at how adults and teens navigated the merger and what we can learn from them as Philly goes through this again. 6-8:30pm. 3000 Kensington Ave. Dinner, popcorn 🍿& 🍭candy provided.

Wednesday, September 30th, join youth filmmakers as they preview and discuss two short 🎥 films; one about the need for 3rd spaces for teens in Philly. (Which we heard them talk about a desire for yesterday) and the other about the affordability crisis and how it impacts teens transitioning into adulthood. That will be from 5-7pm at 3000 Kensington Ave. Dinner, popcorn 🍿 & 🍭candy provided.
