It was all blue skies for Rewilding Philadelphia’s most recent community day. On October 24th, neighbors, artists, scientists, and community partners came together at the Jasper Street Greenspace in Kensington to plant a pocket forest. It’s the culmination of months of community-led design and a dedicated team of volunteers who raked, shoveled, and prepped the site. Using the Miyawaki method, this once-vacant lot will grow into a cool, shady, biodiverse public green space over the next ten years. Residents will help shape it, care for it, and study it through community science. Rewilding Philadelphia is led by Pete Angevine, with artist-in-residence Pedro Ospina and partners @nkcdc, @muralartsphiladelphia, @acadnatsci, RAIR, and @naturalurbanforests. Commissioned by ArtPhilly as part of What Now: 2026.

Rewilding Philadelphia begins Saturday, October 24th, from 10 am to 2 pm at 2717 Jasper Street in Kensington. JOIN US for free vegetarian food, a dozen-plus drummers, participatory art-making, & an opportunity to help plant 1,500+ native trees & plants with friends and neighbors. Info about the project below: Between 2008 & 2018, Philadelphia lost 6% of its urban tree canopy, with some of the steepest declines occurring in lower-income neighborhoods like Kensington, where tree cover now stands at just 7%. The lack of canopy contributes to the urban heat island effect, with temperatures reaching up to 20 degrees higher than in other neighborhoods, along with poor air quality, high asthma rates, and widespread lead contamination in the soil. Developed in collaboration with @pete_angevine, the project is a partnership between the Kensington community & @artphilly2026, @muralarts, @nkcdc, @rair_philly @kleankenzophilly @wearetheseeds_art to design, plant, maintain, monitor, & enjoy Philadelphia’s first Miyawaki forest on the former site of Orinoka Mills in the heart of Kensington. The Miyawaki Method is a scalable approach to planting native micro-forests that can grow up to 10 times faster and 30 times denser than conventional afforestation methods. The technique offers a range of ecological & social benefits, including cooler temperatures, increased biodiversity, soil remediation, & strengthened community resilience. Rewilding Philadelphia is just getting started, featuring artist-in-residence Pedro Ospina @theopenkitchensculpturegarden, & a wide range of educational opportunities for neighbors, including: teen workforce training with @kleankenzophilly to plant, maintain, and monitor the new greenspace, & community science engagement with neighbors to monitor the forest’s ecological impact. Ten years after planting, the site will have matured into a cool, shady, biodiverse public greenspace teeming with birds, bugs, bats, & countless other living beings, while also serving as a place for community gathering, healing, creating, learning, music-making, listening, reflecting, & rest — embodying the idea that with (bio)diversity comes abundance.
