Cover design for Rose, the final book in Oksana Vasyakina’s @ acclaimed autofiction trilogy which began with Wound. It has been a great joy giving Oksana’s books a cover brand identity across all 3 titles. These beautiful books inspired an intimate and personal reading experience for me. It has been a great privilege designing and art directing Wendell Berry’s covers over this past almost decade of books.

The first book cover I designed for Counterpoint, actually—a project I remember starting before I was even officially hired—was for The Art of Loading Brush, newly written by Wendell Berry; a dream title to be trusted with. As my life changed over the years, I had the privilege of working on an additional 13 of Wendell’s covers. His books and stories; his poetry, prose, ideas, beliefs, palpable love of this earth and his deep faith rippling beneath all of who he was, have served as inspiration and guide.

I am grateful to Wendell’s longtime editor, friend and colleague of mine, Jack Shoemaker, for bringing Wendell’s work to the press and into my life in such a profound and timely way. I will greatly miss the process: our team sending hard copies through the mail, me awaiting with hope Wendell and Tanya’s feedback (Tanya always was included in cover feedback and approval). I will miss looking forward to reading just one more of his books. It has been both an education and an honor.

My thoughts are with Tanya and the Berry family, the many friends and a wide and beloved readership. I am thankful for the rich legacy Wendell has left us with and his service to the earth. His work is to be savored and to be studied and to be acted upon. Practice resurrection.

Hand-lettering by the late Christine Colasurdo for The Art of Loading Brush, The Wild Birds and Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community

I dream of a quiet man
who explains nothing and defends
nothing, but only knows
where the rarest wildflowers
are blooming, and who goes,
and finds that he is smiling
not by his own will.

Today marks 9 years that I have worked for Catapult. It was not my plan to work for this indie press who did not even have an in house art department at that time, but things fell into alignment: perfect timing, perfect fit personally and professionally. A dream job, really. I was dreaming of an independent press that I didn’t think existed and there it was. Grateful to my publishers Andy Hunter for hiring me, Alyson Forbes for carrying us forward after Andy left to put more time into his brilliant brainchild Bookshop.org. Immensely grateful for the books and authors, for the entire INCREDIBLE team, for the in house designers who I have gotten to hire and mentor along the way and getting to watch them all grow and expand in their skill sets, also the brilliant freelancers who have worked with us.

It is very hard to whittle down the covers for this little graphic. It has been an absolute honor to read and place designs on hundreds of gorgeous books over this past almost decade.

And a special thanks to Keith Arsenault and Matty Goldberg ❤️ by @nlcaputo

Happy pub week to author @hafeezlakhani and ABUNDANCE! Two generations of a Muslim Indian family grapple with what parts of life we control and what we must humbly accept in pursuit of the American dream—for readers of Min Jin Lee, Mohsin Hamid, and Ayad Akhtar
In suburban Miami, sixty-year-old Sakeena—co-owner of a Dunkin’ franchise along with her husband, Ramzan—has nine months to live unless she consents to an organ transplant. Thirty years ago, at Ramzan’s behest, she left her beloved Rawalpindi, India, for the United States. In the years that followed, she compromised her belief in naseeb, the Muslim notion of destiny, and acquiesced to fertility treatments. This time, she is adamant that she should live as intended—without medical intervention. As her health deteriorates, Ramzan desperately seeks to reunite their grown children with the hope of convincing Sakeena to extend her life. by @nlcaputo
