The Repeat Room by Jesse Ball

(immediately after finishing, I'd rated 3.5/5 rounded up. now, I feel like this deserves the full 4/4 because of how cohesively it's stuck w me (I usually forget the majority of a book within a few days ngl); there's very little I'm unable to recall from this one. as much as I didn't enjoy this act by act, it was phenomenal bigger-picture)

This could have taken 872 other turns, but the one Jesse Ball went w will likely be what makes or breaks this book for readers. The second act is HEAVY. I was prepared for a mindfk after reading the description, but what I got was waaay more than that - maybe more than what some people will be bargaining for. I disagree with the label of psychosexual relationship, this has far far far surpassed that. I really can't say much more without giving the remaining acts away.

In the first act, I was impressed by how quickly Jesse Ball had me immersed in a future so strange - yet believable. Think: The Stanford Prison Experiment meets the movie Spiderhead meets the idea that someone will judge how/where you spend your remaining time after you die (e.g. God:heaven vs hell) meets... the Nazis a little bit? Honestly the direction taken isn't my favorite, I think there is a better "test" out there that I would have enjoyed to see play out more. At times it felt like we were just being messed with, like going overboard on the taboo in such a way it took away from the strength of some of the critique. But seeing as I didn't think of this premise and can't write a book, I'm just going to commend the author for how far he takes the idea. Esp after having already laid the foundation for it so, so well.

Specific to the 🎧, I really really really enjoyed the narrator. At 2x I finished in <3 hours, even having to rewind quite a few times (iykyk) - the perfect length for a commute.

Basically, use whatever the site is that will give you all of the trigger warnings that apply, if you'd feel more comfy.

A beautifully peaceful weekend with my girl @nlcaputo at @moonhillhabitat. There was even a power outage which made it even more sublime and so we “toasted”our green tomato Sammie’s on the grill and picked basil and tomatoes from the garden for lunch. We were living off the grid baby and it was amazing! Plus soooo many hummingbirds! #offthegrid #girlsweekend #mothernaturerocks

Can someone find Heidi A. and let her (he/them?) know that whatever they’re doing is working? This box was obliterated by the time I found it, but all the books inside were dry. This is also your chance to order a paperback copy of IN THE LOBBY OF THE DREAM HOTEL for your favorite friend who needs a nudge toward divorce, or like, is on a journey toward their most authentic self. ✨🌈💊🎸✨or is on the verge of psychological collapse and wants a blueprint for how it’s done.

“I promise; I crush;” #domestirexia #joannanovak

The animal crackers on the cover are everything. JoAnna Novak’s hauntingly intimate poetry collection shoves the mundane alongside the magical challenging the reader to decipher between the two. Blurring the line between public and private, she explores what “home” and “hunger” really mean.

Domestirexia publishes on July 16th, Thank you @softskullpress for sending!

More sentences still stuck in my head:

“I coughed up cartilage”
“he whispered in my mouth”
“Be only a girl: What other rule is there?”
“Do I look vegan?”
“I dropped wishes from the ceiling”
