Creating a sense of place. Central Coast architects with 35+ years of local expertise 🌊

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We studied how the oaks frame the site and how the sandstone catches light through the day. The copper rooflines, rounded forms, and native stone walls all came from paying attention to what was already there.

There's a lot on the menu in this renovated 1950s California ranch home. We worked with the owners to open up the kitchen, dining, and living areas while preserving the home they love. White cabinets, a bold teal backsplash, a dining table with a starburst chandelier overhead, colorful art, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass all come together under one vaulted ceiling, with high windows bringing daylight in from above.

A great entry should feel like an invitation. At this Montecito home, stone steps lead through a lush yard where the trees filter the light and the low roofline sits quietly behind the canopy. It is the kind of approach that slows you down and lets you take it all in before you reach the door.

In the Del Mar beach home, the line between inside and outside practically disappears. Ocean light fills every room through big retractable doors (Cooper claimed a front-row seat).

We spend a lot of time thinking about how people arrive at a home, because the entry is the handshake of the design. From a bright pop of color to a quiet stone path, every arrival sets its own tone.

The material palette takes its cues from the site. Sandstone, board-formed concrete, cedar, and copper echo the colors and textures of the hillside, changing naturally as the house ages. Overhead, the curved cedar ceiling brings warmth and softness against the weight of the concrete and stone.

Our goal with this renovation was to preserve the character of the existing structure while creating a brighter, more contemporary backdrop for modern living. By removing heavy interior walls, we opened up the floor plan so natural light can move freely through the rooms while keeping the original Spanish style charm intact.

Native planting was central to @lanegoodkind’s landscape design

Hummingbird sage, monkeyflower... buckwheat and other species were chosen for their place within the local ecosystem, not simply for their beauty

A kitchen built for a lifetime is more than a place to cook. It’s an open space shaped around the art, travel, and indoor-outdoor living our clients love, because creating a true sense of place starts with listening to what they value most.

IN THE STUDIO SEAT WITH ETHAN ZAGOREC-MARKS

Meet Ethan! He joined NMA in August 2025 with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Utah and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Oregon.

In the studio seat, he brings a winding path of experience to the table, from constructing architectural models to helping build a storm shelter near the Arctic Circle. Raised in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, he carries a deep respect for place and a belief that there is a story worth considering in every project.

Out of the studio seat, he's chasing time outdoors, a funky Gamay wine, and chile relleno burritos on Camino Cielo at sundown.

Rooted in Place

Nestled almost impossibly among enormous boulders and ancient oaks, this home by @nmaarchitects feels like one continuous visual narrative...
