🎗️ National Day of Service and Remembrance

👉 The Northfield Mount Hermon community marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11 this morning at a simple but powerful remembrance, with bagpipe music by faculty member Steven Bathory-Peeler.

Campus flags are at half-staff today, and the Memorial Chapel bell tolled for five minutes starting at 8:46 am. Last evening, the History and Social Science Department hosted an informational and supportive conversation about 9/11 for students and faculty in Schauffler Library.

Four members of the NMH community lost their lives on 9/11:

🩵 Stephen Adams, Dining Services
🩵 Christoffer Carstanjen, Information Technology
🩵 Frank Doyle, Class of 1981
🩵 David Rivers, Class of 1979

Today, the thoughts of NMH & NMH Alumni community members are with the families of those we lost on September 11, 2001, 25 years ago today. This includes four members of our community: Stephen Adams, Dining Services; Christoffer Carstanjen, Information Technology; Frank Doyle ‘81; and David Rivers ‘79. On September 11, 2002, a maple tree was planted in their honor with a plaque, directly north of Alumni Hall, where flowers are placed their honor. Next time you are on campus, take note of this beautiful tribute.

At @nmhschool, flags on campus hang at half-staff today, and the bell in Memorial Chapel tolled for five minutes beginning at 8:46 AM, followed by a minute of silence observed throughout campus.

🎩 Steve Allison has worn many hats in his 27 years at NMH: coach of the mountain biking, outdoor, and Nordic skiing teams; faculty member in dorms on the Northfield and Mount Hermon campuses; and visual arts teacher.

🎨 He can now add “featured artist” to his resume.

👉 “Out of the Frame,” Allison’s first solo exhibit at NMH, kicks off the fall season in The Gallery in the Rhodes Arts Center on Friday, Sept. 11, with a formal reception at 6:30 pm. The show features 28 original pieces by the longtime community stalwart, reflecting Allison’s human approach to creativity and passion for process.

🩵 NMH marked the official beginning of its 148th school year on Wednesday with the annual Convocation ceremony in Memorial Chapel. The ceremony, one of the school’s signature fall events, featured singing, the acknowledgement of new faculty fellowships, and words of reflection from teachers and students.

✨ Among the highlights was the annual Spade Oration, delivered by Amelia Sabetti ’27. Sabetti encouraged her classmates to embrace uncertainty and to work together to sow seeds that will benefit future generations.

💭 “Together, we may not be able to see the whole tree, but we can decide what we are willing to plant."
