We moved to the US in July 2024.
We adopted Indigo in August 2024.
I started fostering in September 2024.
And volunteering in September 2025.

I remember going to the shelter for the first time and calling Niklas, crying hysterically. All those dogs, the noise, the smell- pure overwhelm. But I went again. And again. And again. It took me quite some time until I started volunteering in the shelter but I learned so much about dog breeds and behaviours, people, myself.

Many people always ask how do you do it and directly state „I couldn’t do it.“ And while I’m a big fan of respecting one’s boundaries I do think people shy away too quickly when things are complicated, feelings uncomfortable.

If you don’t do it for the animals, do it for yourself. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the only way to experience growth.

Hilmi - I always think about how one moment just changes everything. How my mom sent me a picture of Hilmi, „Viola“ back then, a 3 year old Black mixed stray, from a Facebook rescue group, and me convincing my then boyfriend to adopt her, straight from the shelter in Romania to Germany. How my ex boyfriend changed his mind when we already applied for the adoption and we ended up breaking up because I wouldn’t cancel it. How I ended up having adopted a dog, living in an apartment, that I could barely afford alone, having a job where I couldn’t take her with me or do any remote work. And then her leaving this transport bus, so much bigger than I anticipated and also so much more dominant, already gnarling at another dog. In the end Hilmi was not just any rescue, she didn’t come from a home, she lived, probably years, autonomously on the streets, even had 3 babies (that she managed to keep alive) until they were all sweeped off the streets and the poor puppies died of parvo. She had seen it all and it had left marks, month of training left me devastated. She had the worst separation anxiety, destroyed the crate, chew a hole in my front door, hurt herself in the act of it. My neighbors kept complaining, even people next door asked me when they saw me in the early morning hours when I walked her for hours before work so she would be at least a bit more tired. There were so many times then and after that people wondered what I was doing, that I wondered what I was doing. After 4 very long months where I cleaned my apartment every single day because she had several food allergies, I sat her down, I cried and told her: „Hilmi, you have to help me- I can’t do this anymore, I don’t know if I am providing what you need, if I can be the best home for you.“ By this point my confidence was quite low. I’ll never know if Hilmi understood me or if it was just coincidence. But then, believe it or not, this is not just an Instagram story, from this moment on things changed. She became more relaxed, less reactive on the leash, my training finally started to show…🤍 by @nnndogs

Today Owl went to a new foster. It’s the first time really I moved a foster and it hurts. 💔 Etto already went to his empty crate and said „owli wag“ (owli gone)

Owl has been so sweet and easy, a mellow chill dog at home, that was easily integrated and learned all the basic of home life really quickly. He leaves house and crate trained and with loads of friends and definitely way stronger than when he came to us about a month ago.

Recently he developed more reactivity outside and since he’s going to be even stronger he needs training. In my set up it’s not the easiest to provide. There is a lot going on and he deserves more focus on him. I really hope this was the best decision for him but I’m just hoping everything unfolds for him exactly how it should (i still hoped my brother @mtsinkognito adopted him because he is just the most beautiful and loyal dog ever)

Well, this is „have the best life, owl“ we love you 🧡 by @nnndogs

OWLI UPDATE:
Im probably too close but he looks good right? Comparing to how emaciated and skittish he was when we first met! 💔

As you can see he is doing absolutely fine here. And I feel like I know him well enough now to give him a little bio:
🦉 He is very wiggly and sweet. He isn’t a crazy puppy and he doesn’t jump or nibble. Him being around 10ish month shows mostly when he needs some help lying down, not playing. But overall he’s quite chill.
🦉 He‘s a very clean guy. I potty trained him and we’re probably at 95%. If he pees, it’s in front of his door, so he definetly understands peeing is for outside 😏
🦉 he’s dog-friendly with a nibbling, wrestling playstyle. He is told off by my dogs for being a bit over the top sometimes, but he’s not super impolite, he’s more clumsy and uncontrolled. He’s taking all corrections well and he is fully integrated into our pack with a small and a big dog. When we meet dogs outside he is friendly and curious, sometimes a bit stiff.
🦉 he is quite easy to walk, great size to handle. He hasn’t shown any reactivity on the leash. He sometimes fixates on the other side of the road but is easily redirected even without treats or such. He hasn’t shown prey drive. As you can see I can walk all 3 dogs (and the toddler) together without issues.
🦉 he is sweet with my kid. He would do great with kids since he’s not easily aroused and he is more on the chill side in general. We have also met several kids outside and he has been very calm and friendly.
🦉 He is crate-trained and super quiet at home. Even when the door rings or people come by he’s not very reactive or vocal.
🦉 he does alright in the car. I don’t know if he has the most car experience so he needs a bit to settle into relax mode.
🦉 He has not shown any signs of resource guarding at all, even though he comes from starvation. No issue with food or toys or anything really.
🦉 he gives full body hugs, doesn’t want to leave your side and just loooongs for affection. And I can’t wait for him to be someone’s EVERYTHING.

And you can see he found his favorite new spot!📺

Owl is adoptable through @wagsandwalks and he is an absolute gem so you’d better be quick! 🩶 by @nnndogs

A day at the dog beach
Dog 1: only has eyes for the ball. Won’t mind waves or currents. Swims like a lunatic. Never rests.
Dog 2: always looking for food. Or rolling in 💩. Rolling in sand also okay. taken in Long Beach Rosie's Dog Beach by @nnndogs

May I „officially“ introduce you to our current foster boy - OWL! A literal baby, who was found stray with two siblings and was picked up by @wagsandwalks from the shelter.

My main mission is to feed him back to health and shower him in love, which as you can see he is desperate for.
He an absolute love bug, curious outside and I think he’s also finally getting the hang of peeing in the yard (not right next to the waterproof comforter on the pillow in our guest room).

Next steps is for him to fully get rid of the cough, do longer walks each day and enjoy pack walks with his foster siblings (which he already did a few times and did very well).
His world is slowly expanding every day and so is mine!

I woke up with a heavy heart: my sweet angel and ex foster corduroy has been returned 2 months after being adopted.

I found a nice foster takeover and she tried everything but unfortunately it was clear corduroy was not getting along with her cat and she found him an adopter in SC that bonded with corduroy immediately. Fast forward to now: a few days ago Corduroy tried to go after the wife’s cat (why they came together after already knowing cordoruy does not work with cats is another discussion)

The problem is, the adopter returned him on the day he was scheduled to get his first heart worm shot.

Let that sink in. He was THAT 👉🏽👈🏽close to finally get life saving treatment.

They finished the antibiotics therapy which is the first step but didn’t want to keep him through the actual treatment which consist of two shots and strict crate rest after.

As you all know we live in California now so I can’t foster him, believe me I would. He still has another month to start with the shots before he has to take the antibiotics again and start from scratch.

And he has advanced heartworm, so every single day increases the risk of him dying or not being able to live life fully afterwards. That is cruel! His time is ticking!

He is back at the @dekalbanimals shelter now. If you can foster him at least through his treatment or know someone that does contact me or the shelter! ❤️

He is dog friendly (small and big), kid-friendly, house and crate trained, low to medium energy, very cuddly, great in car, walks well on leash, pulls initially by @nnndogs

If you read this, maybe it’s already too late.

This is Hulko and he is my friend!

He is approx 7 y/o but he has the playful and goofy personality of a teenager! Life has been hard on him. He was neglected and came into the shelter emancipated and with scars and skin infections. He has been adopted and returned and there is no real reason why. He is a good boy, he is sensitive, he is cuddly, he is easy to handle. It might not seem like this on the camera but if you can handle a dog with one hand and film with the other it says a lot!

Hulko deserves more! He deserves his final resting place, someone committed, to give him a home to start over, be a dog.

He is scheduled to be euthanised tomorrow; his deadline was tonight and he wasn’t picked. I don’t understand why no one sees the beauty in him.

Being at the shelter tomorrow at 11 o clock am on the dot is the only and last chance he got! 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I see you and I love you, Hulko!

Behind every good picture…

…is really me kneeling in the sand, throwing whatever I can find in the desert to get Indigos attention.

Lila meanwhile enjoys that she’s allowed to dig!
