As the days grow darker and the nights stretch on, I’m revisiting the Tephra Lamp, now at home with @time_of_the_sun .

Tephra refers to all fragments of rock, debris, and particles expelled during a volcanic eruption.

A nod to the documentary Fire of Love, this piece captures both the beauty and the chaos of an eruption. Its simple, flecked iron exterior- reminiscent of tephra settling around a volcano- glows warmly when lit, offering not only illumination but also a conversation piece about how close to the flame one might go for love. by @no.such.thing

Polaris Music Prize 2022 Poster Launch & Exhibition

Opening event: Thursday September 8, 6:30-10pm

Location: UnderscoreProjects
1468 Dundas Street W

Exhibition Duration: September 8th- 29th, 2022

Polaris Music Prize 2022 Poster Launch & Exhibition showcases 17 years of vibrant band posters created between 2006 - 2022. Not only do the posters themselves represent significant musical achievements across Canada, but this exhibition itself presents a monumental moment in Polaris’ history as it is the first time the artistic richness of the Polaris poster archive has been showcased together in one space.

Since the organization began in 2006, Polaris founder Steve Jordan commissioned unique “gig” posters featuring artwork inspired by the nominated albums. The posters produced were given as a gift to each of the 10 acts on a given year’s Short List.

The space has been filled of over 200 posters so come celebrate tonight and view these incredible art works!

It has been an amazing experience curating this show and collaborating with @underscoreprojects and @polarismusicprize on this exhibition. by @no.such.thing

Finding myself in a dewy field filled with fireflies last night brought back to mind the images of rhubarb forcing sheds in the UK I so quickly rabbit holed into after picking up some stalks this spring from @aldergrovefarm . With them I baked a forced rhubarb galette showered with spring violets.

Rhubarb is a cold-hardy perennial that is commonly grown outdoors, falling dormant in the cold winter months. Its elongated stalks contain a tart interior whose strong string-like fibres are similar to celery. Though the leaves contain a high concentration of oxalic acid, deeming them inedible, the tall fleshy stalks are used for culinary purposes and roots can be used medicinally.

It takes 3 years to grow forced rhubarb; the first two years of its life being spent outdoors to experience a number of frosts (ten or more).

In the “rhubarb triangle”, Tomlinson Rhubarb in Yorkshire UK has been growing their rhubarb in forcing sheds for generations. Before the 3rd winter the crowns are carefully transferred by hand into the dark forcing sheds where they will spend the winter in complete darkness, limiting photosynthesis. Being deceived of spring, the sheds are heated and held at high humidity to convince the rhubarb to reach upwards, leading to delicate elongated pink stems.

When picking, they do so by candle light, to what feels almost like a spiritual practice. If you’re into obscure music, this one’s for you. You can find recordings on soundcloud like “A Mass of Popping Rhubarb” that are amalgamations of the popping and squeaking sounds the stalks make as they grow over an inch per day.

On a smaller level, tall hand-thrown terracotta pots allow the rhubarb the leisure to remain in the same location, being placed over the crowns in the early spring. This clay body’s porosity allows both the sun’s rays and rain water to be retained and released from its form. These are a labour of love and few artists like John Huggins still produce these fascinating bell towers.

At Aldergrove Farm, a black out cloche technique is used. By using a tarping method to shelter the plant they are left with sweet, tender and vibrant coloured stalks: perfect for a galette. by @no.such.thing
