“Elemental and ethereal, playing in the surf. Dusk and dawn, the horizon is drawn. These pieces reside in memory yet beckon towards future shores.”

Sterling silver, cast and fabricated, and botryoidal chalcedony

Erin’s practice emphasizes non-ferrous metalsmithing with a curiosity about materials and their cultural connections to the made world. Flatware and tools for the table, items that fit in the hand and reevaluate utility, are often subjects for investigation. Traditional goldsmithing practices from alloying, milling, forming and fabrication are worked alongside sculptural explorations in both jewelry and larger objects.

Erin S. Daily is the Co-Founder of Brooklyn Metal Works in Brooklyn, New York, a jewelry and metalsmithing studio, educational lab, and exhibition space. Trained as an artist Erin is engaged in creative practices across disciplines. This includes building a community of artists and makers through exhibitions, artist talks, and discussion groups, as well as creating a studio workshop that gives artists space to build their practices.

In 2019 Specific Gravity, a jewelry and object retail location to support the community of artists at Brooklyn Metal Works, was opened. This shop serves as a platform for emerging and established artists and as an opportunity for audiences to engage with a diversity of jewelry expressions.

Erin has taught extensively at schools across the Northeast; currently at Brooklyn Metal Works and SUNY New Paltz.

Springtime images of plants, maybe banal, but on a BK rooftop I'm swooning. Strawberries paired with spoons displayed in the gallery just a few steps away, all things lovingly cultivated by Brian, and I'm reminded again of what a special place this is. Happy to be here today ✨ @brooklynmetalworks by @noblecoral

Repost from @garlandmagazine

-ness tines by Erin S. Daily @noblecoral

Flatware has a very intimate relationship with the body. In most instances, it is seen with the eye, used by the hand, and brought into the mouth. Cutlery is many things, and ultimately it is personal and it embodies our histories. These objects live with us in very meaningful ways. Having people interact with and consider my work is the catalyst for the “ness” that these pieces will continue to carry.

A hint of a tine, the dip of a bowl, a belly, an edge, a handle. These forms are familiar when contextualized within the dining experience. There are nuances that are taken for granted until the user is challenged to reconsider form and function. Here I take liberties drawing on the legacy of flatware and build a visual vocabulary based on the perception of utility. When an unfamiliar piece is presented next to a plate we understand its intention, and when given the opportunity to explore its use, the work is finally realized.

These -ness objects are all fabricated in sterling silver sheet metal, cut and formed with hammers, stakes, and tooling that bends and gives shape to tines and bowls, polished for use. My relationship to metalsmithing often takes me to the kitchen table, a place I feel comfortable composing.

I live and work in Brooklyn, NY. I share my studio and practice with students and fellow professional metalsmiths working out of, and learning at, Brooklyn Metal Works. This is an artist-run studio that I co-founded with my partner Brian Weissman in 2011. I’ve been actively investigating objects and jewelry since the mid-1990’s.

Can be found at Specific Gravity in Brooklyn, NY.
