🕊️ DAY OF WALKERS: Rev. Canon Jaime Edwards-Acton

Rector at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Hollywood. Co-Chair of Sacred Resistance. Executive Director of the Jubilee Consortium.

This week, he walks 96.5 miles — from Adelanto Detention Center to the LA MDC.

“Adelanto was built far out in the desert on purpose — far from lawyers, far from families, far from anyone who might witness the inhumanity. Our feet will close that distance. What was designed to separate us one from another, we intend to join back together.”

In more than 30 years of ministry, he has buried many people — one of the hardest and most sacred things a priest does. Ismael Ayala-Uribe was thirty-nine. Gabriel García-Avilés was fifty-six. Both died in Adelanto, a facility operated for profit by GEO Group — where every mercy costs the company money, and every cruelty saves it.

He’s walking because an arrangement like that should be unthinkable. Instead, it’s become routine.

📍 See him on the route? Step outside and cheer him on.

📍 Meet us at the finish line in Los Angeles.

This walk is for all of us. 💛

Today we walk. 🕊️

Faith leaders from across traditions are setting out on foot from Adelanto ICE Detention Center toward Los Angeles to demand an immediate end to the deplorable conditions and deaths in immigrant detention.

This 8-day, interfaith pilgrimage will cover 96.5 miles to the Metropolitan Detention Center. We walk to honor our incarcerated neighbors, to call out cruelty in California’s 8 detention camps, to demand that Essayli investigate Adelanto, and to hold ICE accountable for 57 deaths this year.

We’re also raising funds for the Immigrant Detention Bond Fund, to free people from detention.

Organized by @CLUE, @NefeshLA, and @SacredResistance, with @ShutDownAdelanto, @NoCampsCA

Walk with us. Donate. Share. Link in bio. 🔗

Day 2 reflection
14 miles yesterday. 12 and change today. Together, a marathon – but a marathon is a race, and a race has a winner. This has only an arrival, and we are not the ones who need to arrive.

The sun was out in full force today, and without mercy, so I walked with my head down of much of the way to keep the sun off my face. Which meant that for most of eight hours, I never saw the mountains. Instead, I saw feet.

I know these pilgrims by their shoes now. Feet that had already decided. Feet that have carried people through harder things than this. Feet that blistered at mile seven and went on to twelve without announcing it. The prophet says how beautiful are the feet of those who carry good news, and I have always taken that for a figure of speech. It isn’t. It’s a description. I watched it on hot asphalt all day.

Along the shoulder of the highway, I found a necklace, a small round medallion blank on both sides. Someone lost it out here, or let it go, in a stretch of desert, where nothing is meant to be found.

Our church administrator has just taken up engraving. I want to hand him this disc and ask him to put on it that one image that holds this whole pilgrimage. Two days in, I have no idea what that image is.

Maybe that is exactly right. We are walking towards 2000 people who have been reduced to numbers – a file, a bed, a count taken twice daily by order of a federal court to make sure they’re still breathing. What do you even engrave on a life? Who gets to decide what goes on the blank disc?

Not yet. Not on day two.
We named this walk for Isaiah. Clear a road. Remove the obstacles, so that my people can pass.

Here is what the road did to us today. We set out to clear a path for people held ninety-six miles from this city — and the road kept setting people down in front of us. Each other first. Then strangers on the shoulder of the highway. Our walkers stopped. Offered water. Offered time. Offered the thing that is hard as to give when your own feet are screaming: attention.

You cannot clear a road for people far away without also clearing it for whoever is standing on it in front of you.

Tonight we are tired.

Tired is a freedom. by @nocampsca

Day 1 reflection
We began the interfaith pilgrimage this morning from the Adelanto detention center to the LA Federal building and Metropolitan detention center. We gathered in the early morning light in front of Adelanto. We began with prayers, lifting up the memory of those who had died in this detention center and detention centers across the state and country. We heard testimony from those who have been held there and learned throughout the day about the horrific conditions, medical negligence, and inadequate food and water. We named the Kavana, our intention for the pilgrimage, in the words of the prophet Isaiah, clear the road, remove the obstacles from the path and we began walking to do just that, to clear the road of the scapegoating of immigrants and to lift up that transformation is possible.
We walked for 14 miles with the big sky and even bigger clouds and were cared for by kind volunteers bringing food, snacks and water. We ended the day at St Luke’s Episcopal church for dinner with those of us celebrating the pilgrimage holiday of Sukkot eating outside in the Sukkah. We ended the evening with more prayer and song and the sharing of more stories of both tragic treatment by GEO Group at Adelanto and stories of witness and advocacy grounded in love.
Tomorrow we continue walking. Please send your prayers.

🪞 DAY OF REFLECTION

This interfaith coalition has drawn many different walkers, from different faiths and backgrounds and beliefs. We’re united in a common purpose: justice for all.

The conditions in Adelanto and the other 7 detention centers in California are intolerable.

We’re walking because the cost of lives should never be measured against margins of profit. Because family separation should be unthinkable, not de facto. Because it takes all of us to shine our light on the darkest corners of humanity and make it clear we will not avert our eyes.

If you want to help us make a difference, you can!

Clear the Road to Freedom Pilgrimage, Adelanto Detention Center, 09.29.2026

Faith leaders and protesters begin a nearly 100-mile, interfaith walk of witness and solidarity from Adelanto to the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, protesting the deplorable conditions at ICE detention centers, and calling for an end to inhumane immigration policies, and for the liberation of detained community members.

“Build up, build up a highway! Clear a road! Remove all obstacles From the road of My people!” (Isaiah 57:14)

The pilgrimage will arrive at MDC on Tuesday 10.06.2026 at noon.
