We invite artists to join us in the 7th edition of our residency programme on the island of #Sardinia, Italy.

📅 Deadline for submissions: September 7th, 2026

Nocefresca welcomes an international community of artists and creative practitioners — visual artists, writers, designers, researchers, and creative nomads — who come together for a shared experience of research, creation, and transformation.

👥 Up to 7 residents per month, alongside short-term visitors, supported by a guest curator who accompanies and engages with artists throughout their creative process.

📍 The residency is located in the historic centre of Milis, a rural village surrounded by citrus orchards, a 19 km drive from the beaches of Sardinia’s west coast.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Residents engage with a welcoming and active local community, building connections between contemporary artistic practices and rural life.

📆 Residencies last from 1 to 3 months. In 2026, the programme will run from:
• March 12th – June 15th
• September 14th – December 17th

Over the years, Nocefresca has grown into an international community rooted in shared values: the belief in art as a social practice; a sustained attention to islands, margins, and rural peripheries; and a commitment to contemporary languages and emerging narratives.

Alongside this collective dimension, the residency offers each artist the time, space, and focus to develop their own research and practice in depth — within a quiet rural environment, close to nature and the rhythms of village life.

Narrating and showing Sardinia to our artists in residence has always been a responsibility for us.

In a place that is often told through an external gaze or framed by a touristic and marketing lens, we have tried to shift the narrative by exploring local perspectives and following the life stories of the people who inhabit this island. At the same time, we open these visions to the attentive eyes and open ears of artists from all over the world, who become not only careful listeners and observers, but also active participants and contributors.

This is the dialogue we want to continue with this year's residency, following the theme of the previous editions of #UnofficialCartographies. We will let it evolve and expand. The vision of Sardinia will grow through the openness not only of those who were born and raised here, but also of those who have chosen to live in this place, moving here from other countries or from other regions of Italy. The area involved will also expand, embracing the daily life of other villages, as we seek to cross borders to weave stories together.

We have met wonderful souls, and we can’t wait to bring their voices to you.

#RuralAlphabet has arrived in Sardinia! (English version in the comments)
Un racconto corale e caleidoscopico di una piccola area rurale di un’isola del Mediterraneo, attraverso lo sguardo incrociato di oltre 40 artisti che vi hanno soggiornato e più di 20 abitanti che la vivono ogni giorno.
260 pagine frutto di un lavoro accurato e, soprattutto, accorato.

Sfogliandole troverai anche le opere prodotte dagli artisti in residenza nei primi tre anni di vita di Nocefresca, molte delle quali mai pubblicate sui nostri canali social.
Opere che meritavano pagine stampate: ampie, lisce al tatto, di qualità, con testi da leggere con calma, per nutrire pensiero e conoscenza.

Lo meritavano perché le relazioni nate con gli autori di queste opere sono destinate a durare nel tempo, come le pagine di questo libro. Così come i legami stretti con gli abitanti del luogo, che ci hanno donato immagini d’archivio preziosissime e pensieri autentici.

📘 La pubblicazione è bilingue (ITA–ENG) e racconta, con immagini e parole, una Sardegna intima e collettiva al contempo.

Open Studios at Nocefresca | October 2026

Seven artists, seven distinct practices, and multiple ways of engaging with the Sardinian territory.

Through painting, video, scanography, and multimedia performance, Isabella Haywood, Enikő Czigány, Rosie Kgari, Liam Reynolds, Shaelynn Tredenick, Julia Edelman, and Mattia Scioni explore the relationships between landscape, memory, identity, and collective experience.

From intimate observations of everyday spaces to explorations of Nuragic heritage, from emotional cartographies to participatory soundscapes, their projects reveal how encounters with a place can open new perspectives on belonging, temporality, and the connections between the individual and the collective.

Seven artistic journeys, each tracing its own subjective cartography of Sardinia.

Stiamo aspettando il loro arrivo, e ne siamo davvero felici!
Il design delle borse Pane Nocefresca nasce a Milis, dove abbiamo invitato la nostra amata @ivaivanova.design a ideare e realizzare a mano la prima serie limitata di borse dedicata a nocefresca.
Il progetto ha poi seguito un percorso di incontri tra le montagne dell’Austria, i villaggi della Bulgaria e la città di Firenze, cucendo assieme tessuti, vite, territori, ed entrando nelle case di nuove persone, spesso senza passare per i canali del marketing.

Ora le bags fanno tappa a @casa_bagnolo , con una nuova serie limitata in marrone! Non vediamo l’ora di vederle, toccarle, amarle! Perché sì, quando un oggetto è fatto da mani umane, con cura e con tessuti che hanno una storia, è facile affezionarvisi.

Sabato 10 ottobre, la collezione #PaneNocefresca ti aspetta nei prossimi Open Studios, prima di riprendere il suo viaggio.

Sabato 10 Ottobre ritornano gli open studios di @nocefresca. Il gruppo è al completo: sette resident artists pronti ad incontrare il pubblico.
L’evento sarà strutturato in tre momenti:

Dalle 18.30 alle 20.30: potrete visitare gli studi di Casa Oaxaca con i lavori di @juliaedelman_, scrittrice e pittrice statunitense, lo studio del compositore sardo Mattia Scioni (@it_s_seaniii) e vedere i lavori pittorici di Isabella Haywood, facilitatrice e progettista sociale statunitense.

Alle 19.30, sempre a Casa Oaxaca, è prevista la performance multimediale interattiva 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘴, di Mattia Scioni.

Dalle 20.30 alle 22.30 @casabagnolo apre le porte degli studi di @raynoldsarts, artista visivo canadese, @enikoczigany, pittrice ungherese, @shaelynntredenick, fotografa statunitense e @kgaristudio, illustratrice inglese.

While the artists are making their journey through Milis, I’m also working on the design of the 2027 edition of the programme, and I’d like to share a few updates with you.

✹ 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 — 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀

We received far more applications than we are able to accommodate (thank you all ❤️), so a selection process was necessary.
We’ve now contacted the six groups selected for 2027 and are waiting for their confirmations and working through the final details. Once all groups are confirmed, any places that become available will be offered to the waiting list.

✹ 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 𝙣𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙖 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲

I’m beginning to search for the 2027 guest curator and our Erasmus EYE and Erasmus Plus interns.
Through conversations, interviews and encounters, I’m gradually building the team that will accompany the programme next year.

I’m also working on the topic of next year’s programme.
After two years, we’ve decided to let #UnofficialCartographies evolve into a new phase: from an individual perspective, rooted in the life stories of local inhabitants, towards a more collective one, connecting individual stories to projects that can shape and transform places and communities.

An excerpt from the readings informing my research:

The representation of our world has often been a subject of debate, discord, and redefinition. Humans are constantly revising it, questioning what shapes its boundaries and what remains open to perception.
In spaces beyond the frame—escaping unconventional representations—residents are invited to draw their own maps, creating personal cartographies based on what they observe and experience in Milis and its surroundings.
It is within these spaces left out of the picture that the residents unfold their personal cartographies, based on what they observe and experience in Milis and its surroundings.
Rosemary Kgari Smith is embarking on a project on local womanhood, at the intersection of drawing and painting, while Isabella Haywood introspects on how people interact and grow together underpinned by a pictorial exploration of color. Liam Reynolds, for his part, is working on a self-contained short film imbued with Sardinian imagery, serving as the starting point for an upcoming video installation. On the musical front, Mattia Scioni is experimenting with sound materials to develop a performance steeped in ritual. Through her exploration of the local flora, Shaelynn Tredenick is preparing a scanographic series, while Julia Edelman, inspired by her encounters in the region and by the Nuragic civilization, is initiating a series of paintings that evoke surrealist imagery. Finally, between the local and the global, Eniko Czigany examines landscapes created by humans and their ecological consequences with a critical perspective.

Last week, we met the inhabitant of this month of #UnofficialCartographies: Federica (@fendasti).
She brought us to her native village, #Solarussa, where she grew up and where she chose to be based again, after years of travelling.

”Let’s start by connecting with ourselves before entering the landscape”. This is what she told us as we entered her family orchard, a place of care and healing for her. Following the sound of her reed flute, we started moving between the rows of vines and olive trees observing leaves burnt by the heat, ripe and unripe fruits, towering trees, green grass and dried flowers.
As a movement educator, Federica proposed some body exercises and active observation games to help us connect with ourselves and interact with the landscape.
Then she showed us the village streets, the stories that marked her childhood, the places that are important for her identity.

Through our steps, we drew imaginary lines on the ground, creating new connections between ourselves and the landscape. As anthropologist Tim Ingold might say, we “made our way through a world in formation.”

After a particularly hot summer, September has finally brought cooler days and a gentle breeze: Sardinia is starting to breathe again.

These are good conditions to explore the land through the eyes of our fourth encounter of #UnofficialCartographies: Federica.

A young woman based in the rural village of Solarussa, 11 kilometres from Milis, she shared many thoughts with us about her village and the island. First of all, her love for silence and, at the same time, for sound and music.
She has danced since she was 4 years old: she feels it is something she can no longer do without.
A feminist activist and movement educator, she believes in the encounter between body and creativity as a means of expression and healing.
We can’t wait to walk alongside her for a while, curious to see where her path will take us.
