In 2021, during the first edition of @nocefresca , an international artist residency programme in Milis, Sardinia, Californian artist @markhewko created A Nuraghe Odissey, an environmental art installation born from the encounter between contemporary artistic practice and the local territory.

Through a visual language of geometric forms, abstract compositions and colour, Hewko transformed a building in Milis’ public park into a work of public art, introducing a new visual presence into the town’s everyday landscape.

The installation reflects Nocefresca’s commitment to fostering dialogue between international artists, local communities and Sardinia’s cultural heritage.

PANE NOCEFRESCA, Edition II

I have been thinking about the life of things about where a material comes from, what it remembers and what happens when it leaves one place and enters another.

These bags began with materials I had gathered over years of travelling and working. Fabrics that had stayed with me without yet knowing what they would become: the Sardinian blue fabric, the traditional Bulgarian red check, woven for generations into shepherds’ bags, Bulgarian embroidery from the Rhodope Mountains, recycled leather, remnants from the world of interiors and other fragments collected along the way.

Bringing them together is a way of drawing a map without borders. A map made of encounters, distances, memories and relationships. The materials carry traces of places I have been, people I have met and parts of a life that continues to unfold.

Perhaps this is why I think of the bag as more than an object.

It moves through the world with us. It carries what we gather, what we need, what we value. And in doing so, it becomes part of our own journey while carrying a journey of its own.

I am interested in this moment of transition: when something leaves my hands and begins another life somewhere else.

Some of the bags from this edition have already found their way to new homes before I had the chance to present them as I normally would, to be perfect, to gather them, to give them a place, to make them visible. Yet perhaps not everything needs to be held long enough to be witnessed. Some things are simply meant to move.

What first felt like something missing has become a quiet gift of trust a reminder that a work can leave our hands before we are ready and still carry something of us with it.

Like a network beneath the earth, invisible but alive, the threads remain connected.

Pane Nocefresca is an ongoing textile research a living table, a cartography of materials, memory and movement.

October 10th · Open Studios
Nocefresca, Milis, Sardinia

In collaboration with @nocefresca and @paul_micheler who captured the bags in Florence

A presto, Milis.

The past two weeks have been a strange mix of stressful and peaceful - learning to stop and breathe during the moments of waiting, and to hold onto hope during the moments of trying.

This has, without a doubt, been the most challenging period of my career as an artist. I felt like I was being tested constantly. With such high standards for my work, trying a completely different medium of creating - like painting or drawing - simply wasn’t an option. I know who I am as an artist, and I wasn’t willing to let that go.

After so much troubleshooting, waiting, searching, and a whole lot of uncertainty… thanks to the help of @nocefresca’s community, I was able to borrow a scanner! 😭 (mine is at a repair shop being looked at)

Thank you to everyone who helped, problem-solved, offered equipment, shared advice, and did everything they could to help me find a solution. I genuinely couldn’t have gotten here without you.

A week and a half left of this residency.
Let’s get to work. 🌿

Sardinia 2025

It was around this time last year that I spent a month in rural Sardinia as an artist in residence with @nocefresca . Being able to embed myself in the Milis community, engage with the locals, and explore the surrounding landscapes was truely invaluable.

I’ve been sitting with these images for a while, as I tend to do, taking my time to reflect on my experiences. Right now I’m organising my images and thoughts into what I hope to be an exhibition and accompanying book. For now, here’s a selection of a few favourites.

1. Santa Caterina Beach
2. Overlooking Santu Lussirgiu
3. Milis Streets
4. Maria in her Casa Museo
5. Narbolia bonfire for the festival of Saint Reparata
6. Otherworldly textures in Cane Malu
7. Reclaimed house in Milis
