We need your help to submit your public comment about the value of the Roadless Rule by September 21st! Tell this administration why we need to protect the roadless areas in our National Forest System.

The link is 🔗sc.org/roadlessrule to submit your comment by September 21st!

🌲The Roadless Rule helps to preserve our undeveloped public lands. Created in 2001, it protects the still-wild areas of our public lands from road construction and timber harvesting. “In the future, expanding urban areas and increased fragmentation of private lands make it likely that the largest and most extensive tracts of undeveloped land will be those in public ownership.” This administration is proposing a full repeal of the rule.

🔈This rule was a direct result of feedback from 1.6 million Americans via public comment and 600 public hearings. It is now more important than ever that we make our voices heard and speak up once again for roadless areas. We have until September 21st to submit public comments.

On June 23rd, USDA Secretary Rollins announced the Administration's intent to repeal the Roadless Rule, a 25-year-old conservation measure that protects 58.5 million acres of America’s forest and grassland backcountry. This means that over 4 million acres of roadless forests in California are in danger of being opened up to logging, including large portions of the Eastern Sierras, northern redwoods, and national forests in Southern California, such as Los Padres and San Bernardino.

The Roadless Rule was born out of a massive grassroots coalition that saw over 1.5 million public comments submitted to the federal government in favor of protecting America’s best remaining old-growth forests. Today, a large portion of America’s remaining old-growth forests are found in Inventoried Roadless Areas, making the stakes for saving the Roadless Rule even higher. The Trump Administration wants to open up these roadless forest areas to fulfill their increased timber quotas coming from the U.S. Forest Service land, greatly aiding large timber corporations.

The Roadless Area Conservation Act, which has been introduced into both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, would codify the Roadless Rule into federal law, putting it out of reach for any future presidential administration looking to roll back protections without Congressional approval.

Please call your House representative and Senators today at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to publicly support the Roadless Area Conservation Act and consider co-sponsoring the bill.

You can also visit the link in our bio to submit a personal public comment in defense of the roadless rule! Submit your comment by September 19!

🌎 75% of the world’s accessible freshwater comes from forested watersheds; and clearcutting threatens forest ecosystems and a vital source of water, Michael Wilkinson states in an April 25 blog, “From Sponge to Drain: The Hydrologic Cost of Deforestation."

Forests act as “natural sponges,” Wilkinson explains, absorbing and filtering rainwater into clear, usable groundwater that then diffuses slowly into rivers and lakes. Through transpiration, trees also contribute to rainfall and help regulate weather and climate.

But Wilkinson argues that these life-sustaining ecosystems are in danger. He says clearcut logging destroys these forests and their beneficial hydrological effects piece by piece. Clearcut logging is when nearly all the trees in a large area are cut down at once, rather than selectively removing individual trees. This often leads to destruction of local vegetation and the tree canopy.

“With the loss of canopy that results, rain that once fell gently through that canopy now hits bare ground at full force,” Wilkinson writes.

Wilkinson states that without the trees and roots to absorb and hold that water, rainwater becomes runoff, traveling rapidly across the surface, carrying away soil and pollutants and increasing the risk of flooding.

He asserts that in order to fix water supplies impacted by clearcutting, governments will have to spend millions on water treatment, restoration, flood control, and other infrastructure that biodiverse, ecologically healthy forests previously provided naturally.

🌲Protecting forest ecosystems isn’t just about conservation; it’s about protecting communities, economies, and essential resources.

A Nevada developer, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, wants to build a road through Yosemite National Park to reach a remote 83-acre private property on the park's western border. No final decision has been made, but the administration is reportedly considering trading a strip of federal land inside Yosemite for an area of roughly equal value that Kingsbarn owns.

🌲This deal could set a precedent for trading away protected public lands. The Department of the Interior also notified Congress that public conservation funds may be used to cover the cost of the exchange.

In 1908, John Muir warned that Yosemite had been "attacked by spoilers ever since it was established," and that "nothing dollarable is safe, however guarded." We must act to safeguard our national parks from corruption and development.

📣Tell Congress to stop this deal and protect Yosemite. Take action at 🔗https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/proposed-yosemite-land-swap-latest-attack-public-lands

🚨The Endangered Species Act is under attack AGAIN.

The current federal administration recently gutted critical habitat protections under the Endangered Species Act, putting sensitive landscapes, and the wildlife that depend on them, directly in the crosshairs.🐺

The good news? Senators Schiff and Whitehouse aren't standing by. They've introduced legislation, S.J.Res. 204, to reverse this rule and keep habitat protections strong.

📣Now we need YOU.

Take action now 🔗sc.org/endangered-species

👉🏼Message your Senator today and tell them to back this bill.

Because a strong Endangered Species Act means a beautiful, wild future.🌎💚

🚨UPDATE: Unfortunately, this deadline has now passed.🚨

Submit comments and testimony to preserve the U.S. Forest Service's Travel Management Rule — the deadline is this Wednesday the 23rd! The Trump regime continues to throw one needless nightmare scenario after another at America's #Conservation legacy to cause chaos so they can privatize our #PublicLands after claiming they've become ungovernable due to their own willful malevolence and neglect. ORVs, ATVs, dirtbikes, and other thrillcraft already have access to thousands of miles of Forest Service roads every day, 365 days of the year. But the Trump regime's environmental nihilists now want to allow thrillcraft to have full and complete access to all TRAILS in our #NationalForests, breaking with decades of long-standing, sane, and effective Forest Service policy. This would apply to every National Forest throughout the United States. The results would be an environmental disaster for species, habitat, trails, anglers, hunters, and all users of our National Forests. Which, of course, the Trump regime wants. Visit my TommyHough.com website to access a @SierraClub page to submit your testimony to tell the Forest Service to preserve the #TravelManagementRule, but do it immediately! Also, don't confuse this with the pending #RoadlessRule comment deadline coming up Oct. 6th, this is situation is different. I'll have more to say about the Roadless Rule deadline and the shameless gutting of the federal Endangered Species Act soon, but the deadline to submit comments to preserve the Travel Management Rule is on the front burner now, and closes THIS Wednesday, Sept. 23rd. 🇺🇸 taken in United States of America by @noclearcuts

Ask the U.S. Forest Service to keep the current Travel Management Rule in place.

🚩Take action by submitting a public comment at 🔗sc.org/travel-management
OR 🔗https://www.regulations.gov/document/FS-2026-0100-0001

🌲In May President Trump issued an executive order rewriting the 20 year principle that National Forest Lands should be “closed unless open” to motorized vehicles.

What this means: Right now national forest land is closed to motorized vehicles unless specifically designated as open. If the rule is rewritten, national forest lands would be open to motorized vehicles unless specifically designated as closed.

If implemented this reversal could invite much environmental harm such as soil erosion and habitat degradation. It could also impact the experience of quieter recreation activities like hiking. Many public land managers appreciate the need for a “closed unless open” principle as it protects forests from resource damage and user conflicts.

This change would require huge amounts of resources to complete and manage. Yet, the U.S. Forest Service lost 6,000 employees in 2025 alone and the administration is proposing a 75% cut to the U.S. Forest Service discretionary budget in the fiscal year 2027 budget. Additionally, the Forest Service is closing 23 facilities across multiple states and the administration is still proposing prioritization of local management for forested areas with limited guidelines from the federal government.

Tell the Forest Service to keep the, "closed unless open" principle for motorized vehicles in National Forest Lands.
