On Earth Day morn in Bare Cove Park,
The robins sing from dawn till dark.
The warblers weave through oak and pine,
Where fox and deer and frogs entwine.

The red-tailed hawk rides winds so high,
While barred and great horned owls in shadows hoot and sigh.
The maples sway, the white pines lean,
Around this precious, breathing green.

Five and a half wild acres grow,
With roots below and streams that flow.
A jewel within our community’s care,
With life and song alive in air.

So hear the birds and hear our plea—
Protect this land, preserve each tree.

In Bare Cove Park we wander free,
Where sunlight dances through each tree,
The oaks hum low, the pines all sigh,

The birch trees gleam in silver light,

But something in me in that woodland rises up and yells “Not here! Not yet!” “We will not yield to steel and blade and grinding teeth,
To silence, smoke, and dust.
To heat beyond life’s force to bear!”
We scream - “We’ve had Enough!”

In measured tone, but with a fury’s will, I stand up here to state:
“You may not take from me what I love, and give me the bill and debt,
no matter how you intimidate.”

For we old New Englanders are tough and wise,
and we will not be tricked by politicians and developers,

SB 1370 by Senators Stern and Becker would allow massive wildfire mitigation projects, including logging and herbicide spraying, to move forward with little environmental review and limited oversight.
Projects as large as 3,000 acres could be approved in just 60 days, leaving little time to identify sensitive wildlife habitat, protect streams and drinking water, or ensure projects won't do more harm than good. Poorly planned projects can damage ecosystems, increase the spread of flammable invasive grasses, and put public health at risk through unsafe herbicide use. 🌲🦉💧

You can start sending public comments now, before the DEIS drops, so we can enter the comment period with a large base of comments ready. Add your personal comment at sc.org/roadlessrule. We encourage you to add your own voice and your own words. Personal stories and connections to these lands are especially powerful.

You can also call the US Forest Service (USFS) national headquarters at (800) 832-1355 or email the agency at sm.fs.webmaster@usda.gov. Tell them to keep the Roadless Rule!

🚨 Wildfire solutions shouldn't come at the expense of California's environment. 🌲🔥
SB 1370 would exempt broadly defined wildfire mitigation projects from many of California's environmental laws, weakening safeguards that protect our forests, waterways, wildlife, air quality, and public health.
Here's what's at stake:
☠️ Allows potentially harmful practices. The bill would allow native tree and plant removal, herbicide applications, and other activities with known environmental and public health impacts to move forward with significantly less environmental review. Herbicides like glyphosate have been linked to cancer, respiratory disease, and neurological disorders and can harm fish, birds, amphibians, and other wildlife.
❓ No requirement that projects are effective. SB 1370 does not require projects to demonstrate that they will actually reduce wildfire risk or be cost-effective, despite many being funded by ratepayers or taxpayers. Research continues to show that some wildfire mitigation strategies can be ineffective, or even harmful, causing the loss of native shrublands and increasing the spread of invasive, highly flammable grasses.
🚫 Limited accountability. The bill provides no clear process to monitor or enforce environmental standards. Because many of the environmental laws agencies rely on for oversight would no longer apply, there is little accountability to ensure projects protect wildlife, waterways, or nearby communities.
California can address wildfire risk while maintaining the environmental protections that safeguard our communities and natural resources. 🌿
📞 Take action: Contact Speaker Rivas and the Assembly Appropriations Committee and urge them to VOTE NO on SB 1370. Tell them California needs wildfire solutions that are effective, accountable, and protective of our forests, water, wildlife, and public health.

In this episode we sit down with Don Jolley, a middle school teacher in Point Reyes, CA, who leads community stargazing gatherings to discuss the importance of connecting to the night sky. As light pollution from human developments increases, we learn about what could be lost, as with every light that shines in the night, the starry sky above becomes ever more eclipsed. We also sit down with Sierra Club National Conservation Campaign Strategist Mary Lunetta, and learn about the devastating possible rescinding of the Roadless Rule, which protects 59 million acres of National Forest Land from development. And finally, we speak with Dr. Joey Curti, a postdoctoral researcher at the UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science, who has studied the impact of the built environment on animals, specifically how light pollution is affecting the bat populations of Southern California.

🔥 More than 38,000 acres have already been approved for herbicide spraying under Governor Newsom’s emergency wildfire permitting process.
Now SB 1370 would codify that emergency policy into state law.
Wildfire survivor Wendy-Sue Rosen warns that the bill would waive almost every state environmental regulation for projects related to wildfire prevention, exposing communities and ecosystems to herbicides while removing vital safeguards for water, air quality, and endangered species. 🌳💧

Part 1:
They marked the trees of old Bare Cove in bright pink tape and paint.
The ancient skins of these old wild ones, each unique - rough, wrinkled & faint.

Their trunks soared tall, faithful and still,
Their boughs stretched far and wide, Together swaying in a song of welcoming to all who ventured inside.

And so we entered in.
To wander among these innocents.
Five and a half acres of breathing old souls, who were unaware of the horror closing in.

At Bare Cove the hills still roll in gentle browns and greens,
Soft with pine and oak and time,
as they have always been.
Wind threads through the whispering needles and leaves,
Marsh light bends and sways—
a living world, uncounted lives,
Happy in simply living lovely ordinary days.

But plans have been drawn in cold Town Hall rooms,
with rulers, ink, and haste—
Officials plotting buildings and
a parking lots - which will soon lay roots, trunks and boughs to waste.

One hundred forty empty squares
where forests once stood tall,
As if the song of chickadees
