Scrape is a new project featuring vocalist Chris Colohan (Cursed, SECT, Left for Dead)⁣⁣ alongside musicians who have played in such bands as Blind to Faith, Lifespite, Insult, Citizens Patrol, and Abusive Forms.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Their new 7” reminds me of the gnarly sounds of Iron Monkey, Unsane, and 16. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I spoke with guitarist Willem-Jan Kneepkens and Colohan about how Scrape came together and why the record took several years to see the light of day.⁣⁣

“I’ve said it before, but discovering xRepentancex after being XVX for a few years fueled my aspiration to start this band. I can never put into words the fire that band lit in me and the way I felt I had finally found someone who said exactly what I could never convey.”
⁣
“I’ve met a decent share of people both locally and internationally who credit us with having been at least a major factor (or their complete initial motivation) in going vegan, some for straight edge as well.

“I feel like we’ve made something of our countless hours spent grinding as a band in those 20-second conversations. It’s such an inspiring feeling to have known I may have had the same effect on someone else.”⁣
⁣
I spoke with Moral Law vocalist Alex Morales on the website today about XVX hardcore, their forthcoming album, and more. As a bonus, we included a new song, “Scourge II,” featuring Elijah of @amourningstar.vhs ⚒️

I’m excited to announce that Hope Collapse, a band I sing for, is back with our debut full-length, ‘Age of Heathens,’ out October 30.

More than 20 years have passed since we released our ‘Year of the Leper’ EP, so it feels pretty damn good to finally be able to share this.

Andrew Orlando and I have been making music together since the ’90s, when we formed Black Army Jacket after his time in Milhouse. For this new chapter of Hope Collapse, we’re joined by bassist Jeff Kaplan (Two Man Advantage, The Judas Iscariot) and drummer Anthony Corallo (Sheer Terror, Kill Your Idols).

Musically, Napalm Death, Voivod, and Rorschach are north stars for us, with ‘Age of Heathens’ pulling from grindcore, ’90s metallic hardcore, and the weirder corners of heavy music.

Making this album was also a true hardcore family affair. Anthony recorded the drums and bass on Long Island, Tom Cavanagh recorded Andrew’s guitars, and I tracked vocals with my friend @taylorxyoung at @thepitrecordingstudio in Los Angeles, where he also mixed the album. Brad Boatright handled the mastering, while Budos Band drummer Brian Profilio, Philly hardcore legend Justin Moulder, and Silent Majority’s Tommy Corrigan took care of the artwork, photography, and design.

We’re keeping it in the family with the vinyl, too. Shawn and Lisa Connell are releasing the LP through @blackclawrecords. Shawn’s history with Pillsbury Hardcore, P/H\C, End to End, Process, and Charred Remains makes Black Claw an especially fitting home for the record.

20-plus years between releases is a long fucking time, but I couldn’t be happier with where Hope Collapse ended up or with the friends who helped us get here. And yes, we will be playing shows.

Two songs are up now on the @paxaeternum Bandcamp page. Let me know what you think!

-Carlos

Negative Approach. The National - Richmond. 2026.

Growing up in Toledo and getting into punk in the late 80s, NA (and Necros of course) were ever present in my mind. It’s amazing to see them still blasting through rooms in the year 2026 like a blowtorch. Always ferocious and completely perfect.

“If you watched that HardLore interview with Carry On and look at their progression from ‘The Line Is Drawn’ and ‘Roll With the Punches’ EPs, by the time they got to ‘A Life Less Plagued,’ they just hit it harder and harder each time.⁣
⁣
“That’s what we were trying to do here, just be tighter and harder than before.”⁣

I’ve been feeling nostalgic on the website these past few weeks.

Supporting new hardcore is the lifeblood of No Echo, but I still love digging into the bands, labels, and scenes that made me a lifer in the first place.
⁣
With that in mind, expect more articles like these on No Echo soon.⁣
⁣
I’d love to hear your thoughts, good and bad, on the subjects I’ve covered so far.⁣ Hit me!

“A couple of years ago, we were on tour with Terror, and we played a pizza parlor in Louisville called Spinelli’s; the restaurant is like a long hallway. ⁣
⁣
“When God’s Hate played, the place was packed, and I demanded that they turn all the lights off except for this weird red light in the corner.⁣
⁣
“The next 20 minutes were an absolute warzone and one of my favorite God’s Hate sets ever.”⁣

“For the most part, I have a weird voice, even when I speak. However, that never kept me from having something to say. ⁣
⁣
“In the early recordings, I was literally trying to find my voice. You can hear it from record to record. There was no “pre-production” or demos. It was straight to tape.⁣
⁣
“We were surrounded by very tough-sounding bands with very low and gruff voices. I love a lot of those bands. I had been in bands early on that were more ‘tough’ sounding, but it just wasn’t reflective of my personality or the band’s vibe or mission. ⁣
⁣
“We were angry and impassioned, but I just didn’t feel that I needed to try and sound ‘mean.’ ⁣
⁣
“We were known for a positive and uplifting presentation and spirit, and the higher vocals definitely stood out and supported that.”⁣
⁣
Head to the website to read a new interview with Brother’s Keeper vocalist Mike Ski on the band’s return, their place in ‘90s Hardcore, the hallowed Lake Effect scene, and his thoughts on his vocal style back in the day.⁣

This is my favorite Voivod album. It’s never truly left my musical rotation since it first came out in 1989.

‘Nothingface’ is its own music genre, but it doesn’t earn that without some classic materials. Hard rock. Psych rock. Boogie rock. Prog rock. Heavy metal. It’s all in there somehow, but Voivod doesn’t play it straight.

I’ve met fellow ‘Nothingface’ disciples through the years, but most of my friends go with either ‘Killing Technology’ or ‘Dimension Hatros.’

Then there’s my good friend and musical collaborator, @brainscanrecords, who swears by the Eric Forrest era.

But songs like “The Unknown Knows,” “Missing Sequence,” and “Into My Hybercube” are unmatched.

I went to see Voivod (headline!) at the Ritz in NYC in 1990 with Souundgarden (!!) and Faith No More (!!!) opening. I know @carlos_andres_dengler was with me at that show.

Did you also catch that tour? Which Voivod album is your favorite?
