We loved so many Kua’ana Mele Hawai’i submissions that we couldn’t miss out on sharing more!

1st🎥: @jazlyn.noelani performs “Polehoonalani”

A mele written by @kahelemele for his hānai mother, master lei maker Ane Kanahele of Niʻihau. Ane Kanahele turned the rare chocolate-colored Poleho shell into one of the most coveted lei styles today. Her dedication to the craft was the inspiration behind “Polehoonalani,” so its beauty and story can be shared through hula for generations.

2nd🎥: Ka’ōnohiokalā Peters (@mr.petersz) a 9th grader at @kamehamehakapalama, sings “E Liliʻu Ē.”

“I chose this song because it reminds me of my kumu, ʻĀina Asing. It was the first hula he taught me as an ʻōlapa two years ago and it’s significant now as I grow in my journey of hula and mele. Learning this as a mele from him is symbolic to my growth as an ʻōlapa. The song itself has an interesting story as it was originally a hula/oli written for kīna’u, but was later changed and better known as lili’u ē.”
