Moana in Real Life Part II: The True Voyaging History That Inspired the Film 🌅🛶

👇🏽 Save this post to honor the history that shaped our modern voyages! If you missed Part I from Tuesday, be sure to check it out here or @kamoauli 🤙🏽

The magic of Moana isn’t just a movie—it is deeply rooted in a real-world cultural awakening.

Before our traditional Tongan voyaging canoe, Kamoauli, was rebuilt in Hawaiʻi to operate as a social enterprise, she had a purpose: to proudly greet the Hōkūleʻa on her global voyage over a decade ago.

The Hōkūleʻa has an even deeper history, when in 1976, she successfully sailed from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti using only traditional, non-instrument wayfinding, proving the ancestors’ brilliance. This sparked a massive Cultural Renaissance across the Pacific demonstrating that the ancestors were master ocean navigators. 🌟

On a recent sail, Jazlyn @noelanimusic brought this profound history alive. To tailor these deep historical weights for kids, she beautifully wove the story of Moana together with the real legacy of 1976. By connecting the Disney magic they love to the actual history of Pacific navigation, she showed just how brilliant of an educator she is 📚🌱

This very legacy is what drives Kamoauli today. Operating as a social enterprise, our commercial charters directly fund free, hands-on educational voyages for local school-aged children. We don’t just sail; we perpetuate culture.

Mahalo to @therock and @sevenbucksprod for continuing to amplify the voices, history, and unmatched legacy of Oceania to the global stage.

Mele Hawaiʻi and Hula have such an important bond because it brings people together.  Which is why I love this mele, because it always invites people to come up and hula"
