My capstone project, The Crown, explores self-doubt within Black identity and how we perceive ourselves in relation to personal experiences and societal expectations. It examines how outer appearance and self-image can be influenced by external pressures, which can lead to changing oneself to meet others’ standards or ideas of what’s acceptable.

The piece depicts the experience of adjusting oneself for others, where self-perception becomes influenced and unstable. It then shifts to resistance, questioning why that change is necessary and what is lost in the process.

Ultimately, The Crown centers on reclamation and self-love. It’s about choosing not to conform, pushing back against external expectations, and reconnecting with a grounded sense of identity. At its core, it emphasizes recognizing that you are already enough and choosing to embrace yourself fully as you are.

It’s officially time!!

In a World of Becoming is an original collaborative Independent Project created by graduating seniors Grace Butt and Erica Jones at The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago. This evening of work brings together two distinct but connected pieces exploring growth, relationships, leadership, transition, and the patterns we carry with us as we move through love and life.

One work traces the emotional arc of beginning college. From the anxiety and excitement of acceptance, to building community, stepping into leadership, and facing the bittersweet reality of graduation. The other reflects on recurring life patterns and the tension between love and lust.

Come experience this moment with us next week. We would love to share it with you 🤍🩵
