@lafayetteharrisjr @plaxmusic thanks for believing in me ! Story time: Cheers to @lafayetteharrisjr the first person ever to get me a gig at 16 years old when I was hanging out at Lenox Lounge back in the day coming in after high school with my school uniform and backpack doing hw ! At the time I was going to hip hop open mics and I thought this was one - and when I walked in it was nothing I ever saw before . It looked like a movie : a live jazz band - no dj - no rappers- just people that play instruments ! That was different for me - but I loved it . I learned about Sarah Vaughan Red Garland and Dinah Washington Sun Ra Coltrane Miles Davis - songs my Southern grandma used to play when we lived up in Lincoln projects - she would call it “ballet music” - singers ma used 2 play - now on a stage! I remember trying to invite friends and they said they weren’t allowed in there - so I had to lie at the door and say that “ the piano man” was my uncle - just to get inside and past the bar ( at the time I had to do that to get into st nicks pub and showman’s of which eventually I started getting gigs by saying everyone was my uncle at da door). At 19 I remember the first day you asked me to come into @saulzebulonrubin recording studio and into recording an album “Hangin With The Big Boys “ and I was featured on the album singing Blue Skies in duet with Jazzmeia Horn , and few more tunes with Houston Person.. I remember crying praying “ God Change me into the person you need me to be for your glory” - because I never sang jazz , went to school for it or knew anything about it at the time other than I heard it everywhere growing up - and I was picking up gigs and I felt so inexperienced quite frankly - a newbie- folk were MEAN!Thank you for always being a great teacher and pushing me regardless of what people said of me , guide and pushing me out of my comfort zone musically and challenging me ! You would tell me “ Noël forget those folk none of the greats went to school for jazz I picked u because I saw something great” . Delusion has gotten me this far 😂🤭 or maybe it didn’t ! Today I have an actual career so thank you for believing in the young black kid! by @noelsimonevoice
