Lately I’ve been working on hybridizing biodegradable and petroleum based plastics. I used found materials like polyester fibers, insulation materials, nylon pieces and petals mixed in with starch based biodegradable plastic. I had no idea what to expect so this took many tries.
I feel lucky to have shared this process with so many people at @lmcc_nyc open studios last week! More to come soon 🌊 by @nogie_

Heart of Matter
May 23 – June 14, 2025
Swale House, Governors Island

Presented at Swale House on Governors Island, Heart of Matter brings together twelve artists who first met through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s 2025 residency program. Reuniting this summer through a
group exhibition, the artists explore questions surrounding climate justice, sustainability, urban ecology, and our relationship with the environment.
Together, their works explore the relationship between feeling and the physical world, resisting the notion that
emotion is immaterial and instead asking what it means to grieve, wonder, desire, and belong through the specific weight and materiality of the world. Through sustainable and experimental ecological processes, affect manifests in copper and clay, bronze and bioplastic, video and collage, soil and light. Whether floor-standing or wall-hung, intimate or immersive, each piece insists that matter is not the container of feeling but its very medium — that the affective life of objects and bodies is inseparable from what they are made of, and what, over time, they become.

Featuring work by Claire Fleury/Curious Orange, Carlos Rigau, Jessica Bardsley, Sonja John, Samara Smith,
Romilly Rinck, Noga Cohen, Lola Lefrançois, Jaleeca Yancy, Patrick Costello, Laura Grace Chipley, and
Walker Tufts, who were all 2025 artists in residence at the Arts Center at Governors Island

Noga Cohen returns to the 2026 Arts Center Residency as an On-Site Assistant.

As a resident in 2025, she explored the use of bio-plastics, eventually developing Safety Net, which is on view at the @bronxmuseum AIM Biennial until June 29, 2026.

Swipe to learn how Cohen weaves meaning into her work through disruption and repair.

RAR invited emerging multidisciplinary artist and educator Noga Cohen to share about career programs that have supported her work thus far.

On her own volition, Noga reflected on the impact of residencies and fellowships from @lmcc_nyc @nyfacurrent @bronxmuseum on her career readiness and network of support in New York City.

Swipe to read about these programs in Noga’s words 👣

Lots of insight for #nycartists looking to tap into emerging networks and #immigrantartists seeking mentorship.

Thanks for sharing @nogie_ ✨
